Seamless Display Failing

I'm trying to setup Multiplicity so that I can use an old laptop as a extra display.

I have Multiplicity 4 Pro and I have the laptop configured so I can use the mouse and even kvm connection to it, but when I try to use Seamless display I get an unable to connect

Say its either blocked by a firewall, offline. has wrong encryption key or has monitor sharing mode disabled.

As far as I can determine non of that is true, I've tried it with and without firewall active on both machines.

I'm not sure where to look for a fix for this.

Any pointers would be appreciated.

Thanks for getting back to me.

I tried all of that, I can use KVM and my mouse works seamlessly between computers.

The only problem I have is when I try to activate Seamless Display.

I select it from the tray menu, it loads on the laptop but says it can't connect.

Do you use anything like TailScale (so VPN like)?  What does it say on the message about the connection failure, does it list an IP address it tried?  If so is that right?

This would typically mean a firewall issue on the primary end.

I have TailScale, but I've disabled it to get the Mouse sharing working.

The IP address in the unable to connect message is correct.

O

I'm now getting an 'unkown protocol Error: (3)'

Hi GeekWithKids, and sorry about the trouble.

Have you ensured the same exact Multiplicity version number on all PCs?  If further assistance is needed, we'd appreciate you letting us know the file version you're on and confirming it's the same on Primary and Secondary.

This can be checked from here:

  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Stardock\Multiplicity
    • MultiplicityConfig.exe -> Properties -> Details tab, note the File version.

You can also try running our batch file to see if that helps, or checking your ports manually by following this guide:

To be thorough with everything you try, please make sure to delete the prior connection from each attempt from the Seamless Display tab.  Then, restart the Multiplicity process (or unload MP) on both PCs before restarting MP and re-adding the connection.

That said, for connection issues, the path of least resistance is always an uninstall \ reboot \ reinstall.  Have you tried that?  Our purge guide can help to troubleshoot with a complete slate on both PCs.

When attempting the purge, please remember to reboot each PC as prompted (both after removing and again after reinstalling to be thorough).  Please let us know if this helps.

Are you able to try the 4.2 beta release as that had a number of changes including a tailscale linked issue.

The versions match and during the process of setting the mouse sharing I did a reinstall.

I've tried all the firewall fixes, but nothings helped.

I tried the beta but that was before I solved my first round of connection issues. Next time I have some free time I'll try switching both machines over to the beta and see if that solves the Seamless Display issue, Its not critical for my day to day, but it was that feature that got me to upgrade to pro so it would be nice to be able to use it.

I've upgraded to the beta on all my machines, and it still fails to connect with Seamless Display.

I even tried switching which computer was the primary with no luck.

Does it still show the attempted IP as 0?
