KNOPPIX is a bootable CD with a collection of GNU/Linux software, automatic hardware detection, and support for many graphics cards, sound cards, SCSI and USB devices and other peripherals. KNOPPIX can be used as a Linux demo, educational CD, rescue system, or adapted and used as a platform for commercial software product demos. It is not necessary to install anything on a hard disk. Due to on-the-fly decompression, the CD can have up to 2 GB of executable software installed on it.

System Requirements:
Intel-compatible CPU (i486 or later),
20 MB of RAM for text mode, at least 96 MB for graphics mode with KDE (at least 128 MB of RAM is recommended to use the various office products),
bootable CD-ROM drive, or a boot floppy and standard CD-ROM (IDE/ATAPI or SCSI),
standard SVGA-compatible graphics card,
serial or PS/2 standard mouse or IMPS/2-compatible USB-mouse.

I found this version of Linux and it works great and found all my hardware no problems

There are several other linux distrobutions like this, but Knoppix is certainly one of the slickest. I prefer slax because it is only 180 megs big so it is a very quick download and burn.

I was hoping you would see this since you seem to be the most knowledgeable about linux. I have loaded it up a couple of times and thought what a great way to fix files on your HDD if for some reason WinXP won't boot up. Does that make sense?

You can use Knoppix to retrieve files from your WinXP NTFS partitions if WinXP won't boot, but it cannot write to NTFS partions. Knoppix has read only capability.

It's a great distro for occasional use.
I have a copy burned to disc here and I like to dig it out every so often.
Surprisingly fast too for an OS that loads itself fully from RAM and CD.

BartPE is easy to build and use. Has to be built from XP SP1 or 2, not from a restore CD though.
