One Customizer I Dearly Miss

I realize this entire domain is dedicated to the visual customization of PC's.
But, I am hoping that somebody can help me find an audio customizer similiar to one that I used in WIN-95-98, but is uncompatable with XP.
I used to use WaveEvents. This is now a free app that the developer is not going to make compatable with XP.
It let you "browse" to any exe on your HD and assign either a Start and Close event sound or every event available in windows min, max, restore, etc.
I found that app to be great as I could assign different Asterick, Question, Start and Close to each app, especially those that run unattended such as Scandisk, Defrag.
I could hear an error without being at my PC.
But, one of the greatest benefits was, if I heard the system default Start or Close sound, I knew something was running that I didn't want and I could disable it from starting.
So anybody who also has customized their individual event sounds, please advise me of any app or even (I dread this) a registry hack.

you can make the proggy run as win 9x by right clicking, properties.
go to the compatibility tab and in the compatibility mode, make it run as whatever.

I was just wondering, does the program not work at all on XP? So many legacy programs do run fine on XP, so far I haven't had a problem with any of my oldie apps. But as Ugoin (mind if I call you Ugo?) said, you could try compatibility mode and see if that works.

Although I myself would like an easier way to play with assigning and changing system sounds....hmn was it desktop architect someone once mentioned as still working for that purpose? Maybe if vague memory serves. Although that program too has, I believe, been discontinued, it's still available....perhaps the theme doctor site? If that is the app I'm thinking of, I'm dunno if it has the cababilities you want.

most of that is built into Windows isn't it? System sounds lets you customize sounds for a whole bunch of system events. I play with Windows start and close pretty regularly - gets some strange reaction from students I can tell you.

However, I don't think the above can be customized to individual programs if that is what you mean.

Sig: I actually have come across quite a few programs that don't work at all with XP. One of which is even a MICROSOFT product (the software that goes with my MS Sidewinder) !!! Not even in "compatbility mode" (so far I haven't found a single program where that thing made a difference).

Chef Garry: yes, that is exactly what he wants: different sounds for each individual programs.

I tried it in XP mode, got the "?? flood ??VB??" error (should have written it down) but thought I would find an equivelant XP app.
Then I tried compatabile w/ 98, same error. Then I tried compatable w/ 95, same error.
I would reinstall it again just to get the right error message, if it would help. It's not an app that loads up the Registry or throws around system files.
