Adopt a newbie...

I was wondering if there was anyone out there with the patience and willingness to help me learn how to skin, create png files, etc. I have the tools (Corel Painter 8, Photoshop 7, And Paint Shop Pro 8), but not the know-how and was hoping someone could give advice, help, and answer the occasional dumb question. The tutorials just aren't quite cutting it for me.

I'm on disability and am home 24/7, and would really like to take up skinning as a hobby. So far the only thing I've really got the hang of is modifying Sysmetrix skins. If anyone out there wants to help me it would be greatly appreciated.

Or bootskins

Have you tried using SkinStudio to make assemble skins in?

I'm amazed that you spent so much money on those paint programs.  I am asssuming that you don't need help with them.  (How to create a png should be in the paint programs "help" and tutorials).

If you ask specific questions (preferably in the Help or Skinning sections) you will likely get answers. General questions such as "how do I make a skin?" are difficult to answer.

I'll help where I can with Painter and Photoshop...

though on the skinning end, your best bet is to ask the specifics and play around with it as Koasati mentioned

You could start out with bootskins, it's very simple to do and a good skin can keep you busy for an hour or two..

I'm home 24/7 too and waiting on SSI/Disability acceptance.. Do you mind if I ask what your condition is Psiko?

Thanks for the advice everyone. I'm not that good with the art programs yet, haven't had them long, and I don't have the manuals. My brother gave me copies of them from his girlfriend. Being on disability I couldn't afford to buy all of them. I'm going to buy how-to books soon. I haven't really tried wallpapers because most of them seem to be done in Bryce or the like which 1) I don't have and 2) from what I've seen is kind of hard to get the hang of.

I've tried messing with SkinStudio, but it's the tutorials aren't helping a lot and there are some things I am not understanding. It should could with more a a "manual", but that's just my opinion....

I think your best bet is to take apart some other skins of the program you want to skin. For example: I skin windows media player, so I took apart about 10 skins before I even started. I got a really good feel for the coding etc this way. Good luck to you in your skin making! I'm looking forward to seeing some good stuff from ya!

I wouldn't be that forthcoming with that kind of info if I were you. Obviously that is VERY common, but it does not make it right, or legal. The people who produce software are just like anyone else that produce a product and deserve to be compensated for their labor. I understand not being able to afford it, but there are plenty of free software packages out there that would suffice. I used the Gimp (free) for a long time until I actually had to get Photoshop for my wife.

I haven't heard of GIMP. Where do I get it? (Dumb question, I'll do a search) If I can get a free program I'll use it and erase the copies my brother gave me.

Downloaded GIMP. I'll erase PSP Painter and Photoshop tonight You're right Dethnite, I didn't get it from Kazaa or something, but getting it from my brother isn't any different. I saw GIMP supports photoshop plug-ins, where do you buy/get them? And what are some good ones?
