First of all, I would like to state that I understand that the production of music, movies, and games requires a great deal of time. So, the things that are in production now may now be seen until late next year or even 2006. Therefore, by making my statement now, hopefully these words will be heard in just time.
A sequel, covers, remixes and remakes can be a wonderful thing. Especially good if the original was great material. Every genre of music has popularized the use of turntables, an instrument built on the concept of reusing previous work. The movie industry has always capitalized on the success of sequels and remakes. Return of the King’s current box office total of $290,410,961 illustrates this statement.
However, the trend of sequels is becoming a bit excessive. The summer blockbusters of the next three summers all contain sequels. Game sequels are as hyped and as far lined us as well. I feel like I’m tired of Half-Life 2 and Doom 3 and I haven’t even played it yet. It’s as if they think all we want is more of the same.
What I would love to see is the return of new ideas in media. Most of the best games are original titles. Counter-Strike is still the most played and StarCraft is the second. It even amazes me how Quake is still running on many servers. Plus, the top ten box office gross movies of all time are all originals. The problem of new ideas is the risk. There is no guarantee with a new idea. However, if the current trend continues, we will only get more disappointments like the Matrix and Star Wars sequels. Leading us to no longer trust the heritance of a sequel and making the sequel an as unsure bet as an original idea.
