if... you can get a freebie paid solution from.. say, your isp or banks.. i'd probably use that. unless it's mcafee.. maybe norton. or maybe some other offbeat rubbish.
over the years, i've used various free and (freebie) paid ones... and maybe the odd paid one yonks ago before i encounted free ones
either case.. set your windows defender to do scans whenever it wants (without being the active suite if you have another suite) and do the odd malwarebytes (the latest free version is supposed to do a scan once a month automatically.. no idea what kind of scan though)
there's also good old emet which is going to be discontinued next year
supposedly windows defender is "better" because some of the other more comprehensive suites do weird stuff like adding scripts to browsers to check link safety or kinda do mitm to scan https sites. there was a case of some suite interfering with effectiveness of aslr in chrome or some such. depends on how paranoid you are i guess..
there are also linux iso based rescue disk like things that you can use to scan your whole system from usb/dvd/cd
