Replaying Jagged Alliance 2 :)

To tide me over until the latest patch for FE, I tried all sorts of new releases: AOW3, BlackGuards, Warlords II and several others... I got quickly bored with most of them, and the rest were OK but nothing spectacular.

Finally, in a fit of nostalgia, I reinstalled Jagged Alliance 2 and the latest incarnation of the 1.13 patch.

WHAT A FRIGGING AMAZING GAME !!!

The Graphics are a bit old, but the tactical engine is still the most sophisticated I've seen, and the fun factor is still incredible !!!

The characters, despite only having a few lines each and a portrait, feel more "real" and fleshed out than many bland 3-D heroes I've encountered in other, more modern games.

The game is very hard, but intuitive - it's one of those rare games that is easy to play but very hard to play WELL...

I find myself staying up nights trying to retake that one critical sector, or planning the arsenal of my main squad.

Anyway, just wanted to share my awe, and express my gratitude that the game is being remade with modern-day engine capabilities (http://www.jaggedallianceflashback.com/)...

I have played this game almost every year since it was released. It is one of my favorite games and is easily my favorite turn-based tactical game. It mixes tactics and RPG elements well, has great writing and fun characters, and can still throw challenges at me.

While I did back JA:F, I am very cautious about it. I would love to see a modern remake of JA, but so far all of the attempts have failed pretty hard. What Full control has shown off thus far looks good, but it's all going to come down to gameplay and trying to keep the charm of the original games through the characters.

JA2? Geez:D, I played a WAY too much in game itself, addon, mods of all sorts (including Wildfire)... I still remember patrol routes in some sectors.

And I agree with Cyclone_Jack - every "spiritual successor" was a failure. Some were playable to an extent and/or had some interesting details, yet apparently few cared invest required time into developing decent version. Frozen Synapse is good, but it's not quite JA2.

Great game, great memories. If you like tactics and haven't played JA2 yet, I highly suggest to give it a try. Just remember, Steam's version is apparently same as old disks version - may have problems on modern rigs. Or may not. It's on sale, by the way.
