Sins of a Lego Empire

To all Sins of a Solar Empire fans who have an appreciation for Legos, imagine this:  an Ankylon Titan in Lego form. Oh, it's also 6' 9.75" long.  I intend on showing this monster at the Brickworld Convention in Schaumburg IL on the 14th and 15th of June.  Next year, though, my titan wont be alone.  It will have a supporting fleet to help keep it safe from any possible Advent or Vasari ships that may show up!  it might be cool to do a collaboration for that next year with at least one of each faction being built and presented .  (a link to brickworld website:  http://www.brickworld.us/chicago/ )

An update:  progress is slow, what with work almost every day, but there still is time to get some of the major-minor details done, such as support columns and visual flourishes that won't be evident until the titan is complete.  I feel the middle section is about 3/4 done.  Within the next few weeks it will be time to figure out how to start construction of the "wings".

Sorry for not posting in a while.  The number of parts I have determines how many pictures I post (fewer pieces=fewer parts to build). This known setback is being corrected and construction will continue again hopefully this week.  Until and even after then, I will be glad to answer any questions about this project anyone has.

Anyone know how expensive it would be for Stardock/Ironclad to get a licensed Lego set or two out there?

More importantly does anyone think there would be a large enough market to justify this?

I don't mean to derail this thread, I just want some sweet Lego and for Tim to keep up the awesome work

At the scale I'm building at, I'd estimate that most capital ships might be about 3 feet long(?) and probably about the price of a modern day lego star destroyer: about $119-$139.  I'm probably making this ship far more complicated than a professional lego engineer; designing the ship, counting the total parts and going for the right market, I would not be surprised if a Lego series of SoaSE would have titans costing around $700, if not more.  Frigates and cruisers would probably range in the $20-$60 range.

This gets me extremely excited, both as a fan of SOASE and Lego. I'm refining a SHIP right now, but your's is already more impressive! What type of Technic frame are you planning on using?

I'm actually using very few Technic parts. I'm not all that great when it comes to Technics. The ones I am using are more for changing direction of the pegs rather than as a frame. The stability of the titan comes more from internal Lego columns going vertically and copper refrigeration wires running the length of it on the sides. This is the general setup for most of the various structures of the titan.

For parts that need to rest on top or underneath, I have found a few techniques for creating sliding parts, all resting where a central column touches floor and ceiling (currently the titan is resting on it's right side. the top of the pictures will be where the rear of the ship is).

All I need to do now is just finish the last 4 engine pods at the back and the middle section will be done! you can see the start of them in the bottom left corner. The 6 little black marks on the right hand "spine(?)" indicate to me where I need to put some external transparent columns in order to keep it pressed up against the underside of the ship.

Your's is one of the few SHIPs I've seen without a Technic frame. I definitely can't wait to see the results of your frame; it's innovative! Keep up the excellent work.

1/3 sections complete! I'm pretty excited right now. My concern now is whether I can complete the wings/sidewalls whatever you want to call them before early to mid June. I only began this section on Thanksgiving last year, took a 2 month break from it, and really dove into it January. All I'm missing right now are some tiny external details at the rear that are easily fixable. Now to celebrate by watching The Lego Movie, then dive right back into it!  

Before building the wings, I now need to make sure that everything I've built for this so far all works together, so I'll need to turn it upright and sit it on the invisible pillars side. I hope nothing falls apart, cause if it does, I doubt the chances of any immediate recovery of it.

 

A note: the transparent pillars on the right side are meant to be, what I call, "external invisible pillars", meaning they are there to bring external support while being ignored as much as possible visually.

So currently 7 feet long, I would not be surprised if it finally ends up being 7' 6" or slightly longer.

My month-long "break" from this project has ended.  Here are some new pictures to hopefully reignite interest in this endeavor.  I also am doing some pre-assembly to make sure everything fits the way it should.  The upright sidewall is placed right around where I think it is supposed to be and I have the other side ready to be made on the bottom left of the picture.  The upper half and one walls of the middle section are still intact, they're just off screen.  At this point, I feel that while the markings on all of the ships are cool, if I am to try and keep my color scheme going, I'm going to need to put the blue markings in places where I can actually fit them in instead of where they're supposed to go according to the game.

The side armor wall looks great. As for colours I wouldn't worry about it too much, if the model is awesome, which it is, most people won't notice and those who do can be told to donate the necessary replacement pieces or ...

Unfortunately, I may have waited too long to register for Brickworld. If I'm unable to submit my ship for this year's Chicago, I can try for the Fort Wayne, IN Brickworld from Oct 11-12 or the Tampa, FL from Oct 25-26, I'll just need to stay on top of things better. But I won't know until I hear a response from Brickworld in the next few days.
