Frogboy's custom FE 1.29 build

Frogboy's custom FE 1.29 build

Some people were reporting corrupted saves and other problems with v1.20. Others have complained about AI and performance.

So here's the build I made this weekend called v1.29frog. It's from my machine. It's not official but you can complain about stuff here in this post.

Update!

https://dl.dropbox.com/u/8051911/FE-129toad.zip

Specifically, I am looking to see if it solves the problem with corrupt autosaves. The AI should be better too but hard to tell if people will notice.

NOTE: You unzip this into your existing FE directory (replacing the EXE already there).

that would explain how AI is able to sign trade agreements, without meeting first, and/or being unable to meet - I've experienced multiple times a road through my territory, when I know they couldn't possible pass through it to meet themselves, sometimes as early as in tenth turn
End of Sentinemodo's quote

My impression is that the when the AI meets another civilization, it gets access to all the civs that the new civ has already met (and all the civs that those civs have met, etc.)

Hey Frogboy,

I wasn't sure where to post this, so sorry if this is the wrong place.

The AI in 1.2 is very bad at picking city locations. For example, if there is a patch of potential locations, it would pick a 3/2/0 spot that was literally a couple of spaces away from a 3/3/2 spot. I've noticed this happen many times. I would raze an AI city due to it being so resource-poor and find amazing spots nearby that the AI neglected to settle. Do you know why this happens and has this been addressed at all?

Hi

went to install your patch and got this error

The program can't start because SDNXL.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.

Any ideas?

cheers

ps. were do I put the other dll files?

I never asked for a refund, and it isnt what I want.

All I want is a game to not crash constantly on every other update.

Again I know I'm a major *(&*^ because I would like a game to progress and have fewer bugs and less crashes and feel like it's updating in the right direction.

As opposed to yo-yoing back and forth between varying degrees of playability.

Again I stated my opinion and my feedback, and defended my thoughts with valid points.

Keep in mind Fanbois I am 50% upset due to the wasted time and lost saves and dealing with bugs and crashes.

And I am 50% upset due to the fact that this IS an awesome game, it IS a great concept, and more games like this NEED to be made.

However in todays market, few to no companies have the courage to make a game of this magnitude, and if the only offerings are plagued by less than stellar launches, along with many reviews saying the game is great and has a lot of potential, but is still buggy and crashes fairly often...

It just isnt good for the genre and it isnt good for Stardock or any other company trying to launch a similar style game.

I have talked a few friends into Elemental, and they enjoyed it but due to the problems it had vowed to never buy another Stardock game.

I even got a couple of them to try FE, and again they enjoyed it but all have stopped playing after a week due to bugs/crashes, and one has already asked for a refund.

I am trying my best to support stardock and this title, and I dont think I am out of line, to expect a bit more testing and stability at this point.

I don't mean any offense by this but if you're patience is already at an end, it's probably  not a good idea to be trying out builds that I'm making from my machine.  They're designed for people willing to try out stuff that hasn't even been looked at by anyone but me (and only on my own home PC).

It is never a good idea to project the problems you have as being normal.  FE isn't a buggy or unstable game. I'm sorry you think it is but having personally been through buggy/unstable game releases I know the difference. ;-)

I don't think FE will ever be stable on your computer. That's why I suggest you get a refund.  It's the nature of PC games, unfortunately. There will always be setups that are problematic.  I don't want to give you false hope.  If you find FE to be really buggy then it's probably not going to get better for you.

I have tried your builds in the past and have had success with them.

Also like I said with 1.12 I never crashed once during 50-60 hours of play.

So it really has nothing to do with my setup which isnt uncommon, when I read 10 posts about people on this forum running into identical problems with 1.20, as well as hearing the same things from my friends.

I can also link about 4-5 reviews about this game talking about the bugs/crashes saying they hope the game can get past that because it really is a great game.

I agree with them, and I thank you for all your insane work you have done frogboy, but it just feels like you need to expand your team and testers so that this game can reach its potential before too many customers have give up on it.

But I'll leave it at that and just hope that things get sorted.

And for what it is worth, getting the same issue with the 1.29 repost as MulaFlaga, The program can't start because SDNXL.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.

@Mytheos, ok that's a very different background that what you originally implied.  So 1.12 worked fine.  You're having problems with 1.2.  I saw other people having problems with 1.2 so I've made a private build that apparently requires some DLLs that aren't included (which I have no idea why that is).

Supposedly, those DLLs were included with 1.2 so I'm not sure. I'm asking about it.  But please understand, IF you want to try unreleased, private builds from my box don't expect some sort of QA process. They are "use at your own risk".

@users missing DLLs:

Are you sure you're using v1.2 already? My build assumes you have v1.2 on the machine.  Also, did you update via Steam OR direct from us?

Did you make sure to extract my ZIP into your existing Fallen Enchantress directory?

..

I've updated the build that should also retroactively fix those bad saved games some people had.

And again, these have to be unzipped into your existing FE directory.

How are you going around balancing AI's?

Specifically, Ironeer AI's are 2-3x as hard as others, and seem to get steamrolling the other AI's fairly quick.

I just had a game without any Ironeer AI's and it felt like I stepped down a difficulty. Also Magnar is like free research, get next to him early, take cities, profit, and it's not even a breeze. Something isn't working right with the whole slave thing, and he is focusing on magic and research like a madman. If you could make the "magic" AI's better at making proper mages etc. I think that would help in the start.

And while at it, is mages not getting any benefits from offensive skills intended? Enmity and Bloodthirsty are wasted on them, same with brute etc. Maybe letting those scale with mages would fix it a bit?  At the very least design mages with rings etc. and defensive abilities for the AI to use. (and make them build them, he never builds mine)

Wow, you didn't even make it into the game. It was still loading fonts! FONTS!

with this build the game locks before I can get into the game. the last screen I see is the open book showing my sovereign with the game map behind it. I was trying this build to see if my save problems were going to be fixed.  As is with 1.2 after a while( sometimes 50 turns sometimes longer) all my saves will not load either auto or manual saves.  I had very few problems with 1.12.

Yes, I get the same issue. And after implementing all those dll's the "old" patch got more buggy :D Well at least no save game bug so far, so all good right? ;)

Yea, the various DLL requirements are making this a lot trickier than I expected.

Alright guys. Sorry about that, I put an update that no longer relies on my machine's wacky font mods.

I need to try this.  I've pretty much been winning every game since 1.2 came out.  I've suspected it's been a case of the rules favoring me more than the AI being weaker.

A friendly tip to anyone trying this build.  When you unzip into the FE directory you will be asked if you want to replace the FE.EXE file or save both versions.

If you save both versions you can do a desktop link to Frogboy's build & then still be able to play the standard 1.2 version via Stardock Central.

A question Frogboy - Some of the DLL files the extract is asking to replace actually have newer dates in the 1.2 version of FE.  I kept the newer versions.  I runs fine, but should I use your older versions?

libcurl.dll Error same as above... Really starting to about loose it, played Elemental and ended up paying for an alpha that was abandoned a month after release,.. And now FE which has half worked at best through 5-6 different patches, and this time I feel like I am paying to play a beta. I have enjoyed several Stardock games in the past and I cant comprehend how this is from the same company. How much failure do you expect your customers to take before they never buy another Stardock game?

You should return it then. If it's giving you that much trouble.  Drop a note to [email protected]. Tell them I sent ya.
End of Frogboy's quote

Lol I LOVE you Froggy. (not in THAT kind of way mind you), but, I love how you give it direct to the customer. You don't like it HERE, here's your money back have a great life and move along. lol Of alllllllllllllll the publisher/developers out there you have my DEEPEST respect. I know I ride you a lot myself but I've never said anything like that poster did. I just want you to keep improving the game like you did Galactic Civilization 2 my favorite sci-fi strategy game even over Orion II now. ;)

In terms of improving the AI, I'm noticing real improvements.

AI is doing much better.

Crashed with a DX error, first time ever.

And been crashing about every 20mins to an hour with several different reports.

No save game loading issues.

Side note, 1.20 causes my quad core CPU to hit 80%, with 1.29 it runs normally at around 30-35%

@Willie Sanderson - Yeah god forbid I say such a thing, I mean I actually posted that the game crashes, and has crashed often on several different patches, along with having identical issues with people on the forums, along with my RL friends.

I cant get any of my 3 real life friends to play any longer and one asked for a refund.

I AM SUCH A ()&%^$ FOR ASKING THAT A PRODUCT I PAID FOR WORK!  THE NERVE OF SOME PEOPLE LIKE ME!
