Corvette technology: more useless than the 'leave U.P.' button?

Who else rolls their eyes when they see how zealously the AI clutches this tech, even late in the game when my Overlords are cruising around with relative impunity?

In my -admittedly somewhat limited- experience, by the time you get corvettes -and transports to invade- the enemy has battleaxes and you are S.O.L. Even if they don't, do you really want to go down a dead end on the tech tree just for the ability to lose ships to enemy defenders?

On a side note; GAHHHHH! That Torian Confederation song keeps playing in my head, and it won't stop! Damn you Stardock!

Are you crazy!!? I think that Torian theme song has addled your mind. I slowly rush to get corvettes, and then sell the technology for HUUGE sums of money to every one (especially as they don't seem to research corvettes anymore?). The only tech they like more in the early game is deflectors (a really good tech to sell now).

I want an mp3 of that song- hey wait, heres a brilliant idea; make a Galciv soundtrack cd! I'd buy it!

...

Oh wait, all the songs are already available in mp3 format...

right off the cd....

and my hard drive...

...

-_-...

Nevermind.

P.S. Maybe with some new Galciv themed songs exclusive to the cd? I know I'd buy it! Then again, the guy who did that music is probably long gone. Ah well...

Anyways, ya I guess I can see selling the tech, but I still maintain that the value that the computer assigns to that tech is completely ludicrous.

This tech could be useful late in the game IF SD ever gives the Auto-Attack AI the option of attacking only ships with def = 0; basically freighters.

While Overlords destroys the military, corvettes can bring trade to a halt.

Can't you just use star fighers for the same purpose?

I think it depends on what strategy you're going for. I play a game which is heavy on the diplo - I trade for tech and keep the AIs poor (and thus with little defensive cover on most planets). Corvettes are relatively cheap, easy to rush, and will knock over loose defenders - and if you have enough, battle axes - and don't cost the earth in maintainence. I find you can really whip through mil takeovers with corvettes and transports.

Corvettes are also extremely useful for building yourself a "paper tiger" military; plunk down four 'Vettes at every planet, for less than the cost of one Battle Hammer, and the AIs will leave you alone until past the late dreadnought era.

Their usefulness is also very map size dependent. On a medium sized map there's a very good chance the AI will have multiple defenders and some battle axes long before you can get your first transport within range of one of their systems. In this case, star fighters are next to useless but vettes with their higher defense actually can punch through the AI defenses for that early game military punch. If you wait on battle cruisers or freighters, you'll be wasting time and spending more money on the same conquest.

Granted, on small or tiny they are usually pointless because I can use star fighters for the early game conquest and switch over to heavier hitters having skipped vette tech. On larger or bigger, they are only good for the paper tiger aspect.

As for 'leave the UP', it is not so useless as you think. I have left the UP on more than one occasion when it's late game, only 1 AI left, and those peacenik bastiches banned terror star construction. It's not as though you're trading with anyone in that situation (or ever will be again) and there's no UP Act which is worth staying in it at that point, either.

when used skillfully, corvettes are excellent weapons

they have decent attack power which allows them to take out most starbases, attack trade routes, take out colony ships, chase down constructors and freighters, etc. and since they are so cheap to make and maintain, it doesn't hurt to have a lot of them. If I have the tech, I never really stop making them.

If I am frigate rushing an AI and I have the corvette technology, I'll have corvettes near to destroy the colony ships parked in orbit.

In fact my military numbers looks like the following:

at INTERSTELLAR TACTICS - frigates

NORMAL WARFARE
33% frigates
67% corvettes/star fighters

corvettes/star fighters used for protecting transports, harrassment, and random attacks. Here the corvette is far better than the star fighter. Corvettes actually have a chance at taking out an enemy transport.

ALPHA STRIKE
67% frigates
33% corvettes

a surprise attack, transports do not need protection, and I have a few corvettes on hand to do mop up, I have a lot less ships than under normal circumstances. Frigates are really expensive.

after BATTLESHIP TECH - capital ships
40% capital ships
20% frigates
40% corvettes/star fighters/battlecruisers

ATTACKING UNKNOWN TERRITORY

capital ships are the center the attack attack group, followed (sometimes at a distance) by combat transporters

frigates leads the capital ships with corvettes at point

corvettes are placed with transports, at right and left
flank of attack, sometimes frigates are placed at the flank, too

when enemy ships come into sight

capital ships engage enemy captial ships, combat transporters, and frigates

frigates pick off non-capital ships and clear systems off transports, colony ships, freighters, etc. sometimes I uses corvettes for this job too.

corvettes attack trade routes / protect combat transports if I have a stack greater than 5 / luring enemy ships into attack range / protect flanks of a attack group (advance warning anyways - I try to take sensor drones, but sometimes they are just too slow)

corvettes are just so cheap I can make an endless supply even on undeveloped colonies with low military spending rates and the starship bonus that you would like for your capital ships isn't really necessary.

On higher spending rates, I build battlecruisers instead of corvettes and less frigates, since battlecruisers can do most of the things a frigate can do and are far cheaper to maintain

As for leaving the UP
I haven't found it necessary to leave, but it would be quite useful in several cases:

20% warfaring tax
terror stars
economy tax

you can still trade with minors right??

End of quote

You got to expand your thinking a little bit, like some of the others suggested. Do not think "My big ship smashes your small ship." Do think what can the small ship do instead. Recon and cleaning up soft targets are excellent uses for corvettes even late in the game. Especially if you build Eyes of the Universe.

Off topic a bit . . .

can you leave the UC but still trade with the minors? My first experiment would indicat not?

Cotal, not sure, but the rulebook says you can - never been there.

I actually like the corvette. During the midgame (when battleships and the occasional dreadnought are standard ships of the line), you can crank out a "wolfpack" of 8-12 'vettes in about 2 turns - maybe 3. Turn them into a fleet (WITHOUT any escort - it'll just kill the wolfpack's speed advantage), send 'em into enemy territory, and start looking for soft targets - starbases without a ton of add-ons, freighters, mini-freighters and constructors. Peel off a couple of 'vettes for each, join up the fleet after the strikes to move on to the next batch of targets, and watch your enemy's economy crash in a real hurry. Fun!

If you get really lucky, you might even find a juicy planet guarded by a couple of lousy defenders. Take 'em out and move on. Even without transports around to invade, the AI seems to hate having undefended planets and will juggle to correct it.

If they send in a "response team" to deal with your little band of annoyances, it's usually capital ships that would be otherwise keeping your own guys busy on the front lines, and the 'vettes simply move too fast to get caught.

And if you clean out the interior of their empire, or just get tired of moving them around, you can always just hurl the whole wolfpack at a wounded battleship or something to get rid of the upkeep cost.

Had a blast in my last game (on a Large map) chasing an Arcean constructor about 2/3 of the way across the galaxy, closing 1 square at a time (they had some better speed upgrades, apparently). Mr. Constructor started making a run for an open resource on the far-left side of the map in the smoking ruins of the Altairian's former empire. I'd already moved all my capital ships back to the Arcean front, so I sent a couple of 'vettes after the guy, starting a mile behind him but steadily closing. Imagine the dialogue on board. (Arcean tactical officer) "Sir, they're STILL GETTING CLOSER!"

One thing thats always bugged me about space games is the idea that constant thrust equals constant velocity in the void.

Or that star fighters move at about 40 MPH on the movie screen? And maneuver better than a World War I biplane? G-forces, anyone?

"GNN update - the Yor have conquered the galaxy simply because all of their opponents were biological. During space battles, opposing crews were converted into sticky paste during high-speed maneuvering, leaving their planets undefended."
Biplanes manuvered well?

Anyway, I would think conquest would be ridiculously easy for a mechanical life form. Just break out the biological weapons and let them loose simultaneously, by the time the victims know whats going on, its too late.

As for G-forces, I'm sure they'd find a way to deal with that, some kinda supertight space suit like the flight suits we have today.

Or they could be drone fighters ;D.

ah, I have the relaxing club music of the Torians on repeat now on my handy windows media player. Now if those Torians only brought some of that grass o' theirs.... :CONGRAT: :d
