How it should have been/How it coud be

Ok, I really do love this game, I got it a long time ago and have played it on and off, but there have been a few, ever present problems for me.

The space battles just don't cut it. Often I really can't tell who's shooting and whose shot with beam weapons. Missiles and mass drivers will fly up, stop when the get to their target, and then blow up a second later. A cannon that faces one way will shoot behind itself. Armour and MD are just different coloured shields.

The ship design also never turns out as well as I think it will. You just...slap some parts on and it's actually pretty hard for me to make the design look good or original. It is also not quite as in-depth as I'd like. For example, has anyone heard of the game Star ruler? In that game, you have for example power generators, a bridge, life supoort, ammo caches, and how big these things are actually makes a difference. The downside is you can't change the actual shape of the ship, you can't really chose where subsystems go and all the ships look pretty much the same, not to mention pretty bad graphics. However, you have so much design flexibility. If you want you can do a load of research into one weapon type, construct a massive ship with a massive weapon and use it as a death-star. Give your life-support systems an emergency generator so that the crew doesn't die if main power is disabled in combat, or if you want just make the ship a drone.

My point: I'd really like to see a sort of combination of these two games: what I feel Galactic Civ should have been. I'd really like to see this game modernised, even though I love it as it is anyway. Give us sins of a solar empire battles, more complex design options and have all those options mean something. Then I will place Galactic Civilizations at the top f my game pile. So, does anyone else have some ideas for Galactic Civs 3? Does everyone hate me for dissing this game? Please reply!

While I agree that some visual improvement would be nice, I am really tired of people wanting tactical combat in GalCiv II. It's frankly a relief to not have micromanage battle after battle for once. So if that's what you mean by "wanting SOASE-style combat", then I'll have to strongly disagree.

No, what I mean is visual. Galactic civilizations is not about tactics, it is about strategy. However, I think the visual displays do not do the game credit. On the whole tactical idea though, I think it would be cool if you could take command of a single ship, design bridges and then hop in. However, this I think would also deviate from Galactic Civ's charter. All I want is some nicer vfx, and Sins is a great example of what I have in mind.

If you're just talking visuals, I agree.

Some better ground battles might be good too, DA was alright but TA land battles were just pulsing flags on a map and a few screens...How about a vehicle and ground troop designer as well as a starship one?

Also, do you think more enhanced design features are a good idea? (As I said: power generators, life support, bridges, ammo and fuel and the like)

Not really.  The simpler the design choices are, the less chance that the AI will stuff up its own designs.  It already has difficulty letting go of smaller hulls which means that if it uses engine components on larger ships, the smaller ships tend to slow them down because they lack the space for engine components and weapons.  Adding more components to the mix only makes sense if you have an AI that can take advantage of them and see all the potential drawbacks.

Perhaps since the AI could not properly handle TA (or so I have heard from none-noobs) it does need an overhaul. The AI in the game Star  Ruler which I have got these examples from seems to work alright with it.

Okay well good luck persuading Stardock to add a bunch of new modules and features and the AI fixes to make them work three years after the release of the last expansion.  I don't think it will happen, but knock yourself out.

End of MarvinKosh's quote

To be fair, he was campaigning for this to be in GalCiv III.

Fair enough then.

I did not say Galactic Civ 3 was a realistic possiblilty, just that I'd like to see it and I'd like to see the above things in it.
