Modding text files

(Edited on 7 januari 2012)

This topic was me asking how to change text files in the minor events and the race names and descriptions. For anyone else who might be trying the same thing:

Event texts:

I own the "ultimate edition", and thanks to the poster under this message I was able to figure out how it works. I've been able to change the event texts in the game by editing Dark Avatar\Data\English\Events.XML

Apparently the Ultimate Edition uses only the Dark Avatar event file! Any changes to the data files in the other folders won't show up in the game.

Race info:

As of today I'm still unable to change the race names and descriptions in Ultimate Edition. Any information on how to do it would be greatly appreciated!

You may have to edit all three event files in order to get the desired results (the one for DL, the one for DA, and the one for TA), but I'm not clear on what the folder structure looks like for UE, so I can't direct you appropriately.

However, assuming that it's anything like non-bundled, it looks like you may have been just editing the Dread Lords event file, which may well have no effect by itself if you're playing the Dark Avatar or Twilight chapter.

I apologize; it's been quite some time since I did anything with events, but I do remember having some issue somewhat like that, and I believe it had something to do with modding all three of them.

For what it's worth, even the modding that you're doing will more or less break Metaverse (MV) compatibility-you can still post, but it'll be "cheat flagged" and while the score itself will show for the game, it won't contribute to your overall character score (nor is it included in the divisor for total score, IIRC).  Many of us have a "cheat flagged" game for one reason or another, though, so it's not really something to worry about.  I have in fact considered playing games modded to my satisfaction and submitting them to the MV, simply to show off differences.  Unfortunately the GC2 MV can't distinguish between mods, but maybe GC3 will be able to; a Mod Metaverse would certainly shake things up a bit.

This was me explaining in a long winded manner how I was unable to change the karma modifier types and % value amounts in the events file. The "good" karma option seems to be bugged no matter what I try. I have therefore settled for only editing the event texts and leaving the values the way they were.

I believe all the Good choices have a negative modifier to them, so if you input it as a negative number, it -should- do what you want it to.  Can't guarantee it, though.

I thought it was possible to change the attributes, but I'll have to look into it again.

Will get back to you on this in a couple of days.

I was able to make a "mod" that makes the planet colonization events look a little less far fetched. I removed all the "magic precursor devices" events and replaced them with descriptions that attribute abilities to the planets themselves rather than devices that the precursors happened to have built on them in the past. I've kept the % stats the same.

The reason for this is that I'm somewhat of a purist when it comes to TBS games. I thought it was inaccurate that an event would explain the presence of a precursor device while in the planet screen none of the squares would contain a precursor special resource or "alien artefact" resource.

I also changed the karma dialogue options and changed a lot of the "weird" events like the one with the zombies and the one with the two-headed squirrel picture. I've replaced most (nearly all) of the event pictures with the works of various artists I found online. These are some examples:

End of Jurremans's quote

Well, random events can happen on any planet except the first one you colonize. So if you leave the low-PQ planet in your home system for later (as you probably should), anything can happen.
