Preview of new Stardock download store / updater

So with Impulse over to Gamestop and the digital distribution competition no longer something we’re participating in we’ve developed a new digital updating client – Stardock Central (what’s old is new again).

But unlike the old “big” client, the new one is very…very simple.

image

(sorry for the lame screenshot, I’m caught up on my games on this new machine and haven’t installed any apps yet).

Your Stardock purchases will show up here once you login. Just pick what you want to install (or update) and press a button and it’ll use our massively fast CDN to install it (we have a long-term agreement with our CDN except now the only thing using its bandwidth is our stuff so the download speeds are kind of ridiculous – it’s like being the only guy on a 1 gigabyte line).

image

The new settings includes an option to have it simply update your software automatically.  So you can either choose to stick with older versions or always have it up to date.

..

OK, let’s say you don’t like to have to install a client at all.  That’s fine too.  You can update your software and games via the web as well:

image

Pick whether it’s software or games and it’ll look at your account, when you last updated, and off you go.  The installer will figure out what you need to install (i.e. if you have multiple machines with different versions) and off you go.

It’s designed to be as streamlined as possible.

UPDATE: TRY THE LATEST VERSION HERE:

There are several apps missing from my account page that I would like to have available. They were either available at the time of my first ODNT sub through SDC or later through Impulse. I have mentioned these in the forums before and never got a satisfactory reply as to how to obtain them. I don't  want to e-mail sales or support over apps I haven't installed or used if I don't have to. I just want them to be easily obtainable by whatever method I get all my ODNT apps through if I decide to use them later.
End of Wizard1956's quote
The My Downloads page should show every stand-alone app that you have bought and products that are part of your current ODNT subscription.  More *may* show up due to changes in the system over the years.  (For example you may see WebBlinds which was discontinued after IE5 was released or Enhanced File Dialog that was discontinued somewhere around WindowsXP's release.)

The thing is, Stardock does not have an obligation to store old applications for customers.  That is up to the customers and we do it if we can.  If you have a backup that one of our systems created that you can't access, we will make a reasonable effort to help you out . . because it's how we'd want to be treated.  We won't spend a ton of time and money to restore a ten year old application that a customer paid $10 dollars for back then.  That's no way to run a successful business.

As far as uninstalling through Impulse before installing an update . . . that may not be necessary depending on the application.  For detecting whether there is an Impulse installation . . I'll have to pass that along to the devs of the new SDC for evaluation for a future build.

Thanks for the clarification, Zubaz. I do have those admittedly old apps archived using the "Download and archive" function in Impulse. I did this on a Win7 PC though. Well, if I can't install them later on an XP rig, so be it.  It's no great loss as I have no plans of going backwards on my OS's. ;)

I'm looking forward to the release of the new system.

Brad , I believe you could have kept the "Impulse" moniker in the deal with GS (just in case). They seem hell bent on trying to erase every aspect of it over there. With GS's poor reputation with the PC gaming community, I believe they are making a big mistake. It probably won't be long until they are offering console games. The increasing number of "Steam" offerings on Impulse is definitely raising some eyebrows. I did save the Impulse Icon to replace the ugly GS one. But, I guess that's no longer your concern and rightly so.

Anyway glad to see the return of SDC too. I'd much rather support SD directly. I'll be watching for the email.

Why would you want an XP rig later?  Or at all, for that matter?   :P

As for your list, all those listed show up in my account. And Impulse. All I'm missing in the My Account page is Enhanced File Dialog, which I loved, but no longer works. So no biggie.

I don't ever expect to be going back to XP. I do run it on a dual boot for testing purposes only, and for my business equipment.

OK, sorry for going off topic. This isn't an I Hate XP thread...lol.

EDIT - Posted before seeing earlier replies.

Wizard -

Then there is a glitch on your page.

All of them except Fences (Free) are listed on my page (I have an ODNT sub and assume you do, too) - I wouldn't expect the free versions of any of the apps to be there, though, since you don't need an account to get them.

I show Fences free and Pro, as well as LogonStudio free and Pro.

Interesting.  And I stand corrected.  Just looked again & indeed found LogonStudio Free, but no Fences Free.  Just another of the many little things that make you love Stardock. ;)

Pre release preveiw looks great and will look even better once installed. . Keeping it in the SDC house simply makes sense. . Can't wait!! B)

I was but that has been merged long ago and can no longer be logged into under that e-mail address.

My point is, if it shows in Impulse, it should show in MyAccount.

I don't see all mine either, Just the very current ones

and I liked Object Edit & it worked just fine on Win 7 32 & 64

As alwaus, email support and we'll see what we can do.

Also, while support has love Object edit, we've since moved to the free Notepad++ and love it.

I have been without Internet at home for about 7 months now so I have not been able to install the OD software I purchased before. Now without Impulse I have been trying to figure out how to do it again but have yet to figure it out, till now that is. I'm glad we have a way to do it again but I have 2 questions if I may:

1) I bought my copy of ObjectDesktop about 2 years ago and never renewed the subscription to continue getting updates. I should still be able to get copies of the versions from before the time my subscription ended right?

2) Also I would like to upgrade to the latest, will I have to buy ObjectDesktop again ($75 last time) or can I simply subscribe for the current subscription price ($20 last time I checked)?

Thanks in advance.

Unfortunatly, not.  If you have a backup, you can use that.  If you have the apps installed, you can use that forever.  But if you want to re-download . . you will need to renew.

You can renew at the current price of $25.

So what you are saying is that I did not purchase OdjectDesktop for $75 I simply rented it for 1 year? I depended on Impulse to hold the software for me but now that it's gone I can no longer get it back? I remember talking about this a while back and recall being told that I can get access to them but only the updates to the point my subscription expired. Now I am being told "tough luck, you didn't download them when you had a chance too bad"? What was the point of Impulse if I was better off downloading the actual software itself?

I am very disappointed in this and upset that I spent a lot of money on software I can no longer get simply because I did not download it when I was provided a cloud based option to use at the time. Had I known I was not gonna be able to access the software I paid for I would have never bought it. Feel free to keep my copy of ObjectDock as well. I probably can't get that one either.

Thank you for the heads up. I'll stick with store bought from now on regardless of updates.

This pretty well explains what you should have done to ensure you had backups to your ObjectDesktop programs.

"If you have a subscription to Object Desktop you should know that as long as your subscription is active then you will always have access to the latest and greatest apps available.  One very important point to make is that everyone should make a backup archive of their apps in case they ever need to be restored if for whatever reason you don’t have access to the current updates."

I'm lost.  I tried to find and download the new Stardock Central.  The website is telling me to create a new account.  I don't think that's right.  Shouldn't I just be logging in with my old Impulse account?  How else would you know what games I have?

It's not out yet.

Great news!

Will your membership_customers be advised through eMails once that brand new SD-Central product is activated?

Just got an update for GC2-Twilight (editors or somethin'!) & SkinStudio-7 from GS and somehow it didn't feel like an authentic StarDock process!

Keep us informed, please.

I said it before and I'll say it again that is not how it is worded on stardock.com

"A Year of Free Updates

When you purchase Object Desktop, you automatically get a 1-year subscription to ObjectDesktop.net and not only get all of the features Object Desktop has today, but all of the features for a full year.

This means you will receive all updates and new programs added to Object Desktop throughout the year automatically. What you download is yours forever and at the end of the year, you can continue your subscription or stick with what you already have."

it never has stated on the site when buying Object desktop that you had to archive it in order to use it forever.
