Merchants of Death

Today, I won my third game on the tough difficulty.

This time, however, I took a different approach.

Like before, I won via diplomatic victory. But instead of trading away tech to make friends, I traded away powerful ships.

In a way, I became an arms merchant.

I was wondering, who else became an arms merchant in their games and won too.

Reminds me of one of the first PC games I played (Alien Nations).  I thought I was on to easy money when I made weapons to sell to another race;  they soon declared war on me - didn't occur to me to think what they could (or would) to do with their purchases:blush: .

Guess someone wants to get the Ballistic Discount on you.  x_x

But that is why for most of my trades, I demanded treaties and other binding agreements as payment.

And I keep the best weapons for myself.

Did you do better with this strategy than you would've by NOT making the ships and saving the money (by turning off or diverting production) to buy stuff with?  Seems to me that the AI typically undervalues ships; that's why i can buy 'em for a song and convert 'em to colony and constructors cheaper than I can make 'em myself.

The AI will value your ships more if the following are true:

  • The Ships-to-be-sold are top of the line or near top of the line.
  • The Ships were not pieces of crap.
  • You have good relations with the AI. And
  • There are conditions that will compel them to buy ships (i.e. their military is very weak/ the weakest, they are at war with someone very strong, etc.)
