Ship Design Question

I customized lots of ship styles using my own templates. That works well for me, but when an AI uses one of those styles it sometimes places weapons, defenses, engines etc in absurdly large sizes and very strange positions onto those ships. This really spoils the appearance.

Is there a way to define what size and/or hardpoints the AI should use for this? I created those templates without any weapons etc because I think for templates it doesn't matter anyway.

If you create a template with weapons, then those will show up as cosmetic components when the AI designs a ship with the template.

The only way I know of to minimise the impact of AI-placed components is to use a large ship design with repeating sections, that way the placed components will have a small impact on the resulting appearance.  There's these, for example.

I've seen those, they look very good IMO, but I always enjoy designing my own.

Didn't know about those weapons etc. showing up as cosmetic parts, that gives some nice options...

There's a mod on the library (I don't recall the name offhand) which provided invisible design pieces which just served to consume hardpoints for this very purpose. Just be sure you leave enough open in appropriate locations for the AI to add as many as it needs to.

Thanks, I dl-ed the mod.
