Combat questions

I've read many posts and articles on how combat works in Galciv II, but what I see makes no sense to me. Can anyone explain what I see?

Example 1: I attack the dreadlords ship that has 1hp left and has loads of missile attack but no defense in any category. My ship has a missile attack of 25 but no defense either. End result: my ship is destroyed and the dreadlord's ship now has 18hp. How? Surely my ship has to cause some damage? Ultimately it means that there is no point me attacking a single dreadlord ship with one that doesn't approximately match it in firepower. Though this also works for me: sometimes I attack a dreadlord ship and come out of it with no damage at all...

Example 2: this time I attack a dreadlords fleet with one of my fleet. This time, the damage seems to be consistent with the rules that I have read about EXCEPT a ship with only missile attack (for example a ship that has a missile attack of 50) appears to be able to sometimes fire at 2 ships in a single round. I thought this was only possible for each type of weapon. Am I wrong in this?

I'm assuming you are attacking the Dread Lords in the campaign after the first expansion, am I correct?

If that is the case then beware:

If at that turn both ships will perish, then the game will resort to a tie breaker rule:

tie rule #1: if in last round of combat surviving ship(s) destroy each other, the strongest ship still survives (the strongest seems to be the ship with highest attack).

I'm sure that is the best explanation. Someone else can help or correct me.

I'm running the Ultimate Edition - v2.03, and this is the DreadLords campaign.

I don't think that this rule explains it: if I attack with a ship with around 150 missile attack (the DreadLords have 300+) then I tend to win in one-on-one combat - it's just with the ships I have that have missile attack around 25-50 that seemingly can never win in a one-on-one combat even though the DreadLords have 1hp.

It's becoming a real frustration in the game for me because to make it work, my only choice is to use small ships in fleets and ensure they only attack DreadLords that are also in fleets since my ships can then destroy a DreadLord or two, but as soon as there is only one of them , I have to make sure I've got a bigger ship with more firepower to win (even though they have half the firepower of a DreadLord).

If you are playing the Dread Lords campaign in Ultimate edition, then here is a tip:

Focus on smaller ships in large numbers. They each should have lots of firepower (missiles will help you out) and they should be in groups of 5 or more (a bigger logistics will help you on that).

Larger ships are more useful on defense, especially combined with Omega Defense System super project.

Also, have each planet keep a "interceptor ship" to stop transports if you can afford it.

If you need more tips, then you could ask around.

However, I can win ok - I'm just trying to understand how the combat scenarios I've outlined work in this way: it seems that there are completely different rules for fleet combat to one-to-one combat, and the latter makes absolutely no sense. So I'm trying to see if anyone can explain what I'm seeing to me as I'm sure it can't be right.

Switch on the options which show all battles in the shot-by-shot screen. There, you can see exactly when and what is in each round of combat - could be you have been unlucky and your ships have always made a low attack-score (on each round, it is random between 1 and your ships' attack value; with the DLs the battle is usually finished after 1 round).

Ships which destroy enemies get experience (and more HPs) in mid-battle.
