Everytime I start negotiation a surrender even when I'm winning, when negoations are over I'm destroyed???

Everytime I start negotiation a surrender even when I'm winning, when negoations are over, then the I'm  destroyed screen pops up.  Has anyone experienced this problem? Am I missing something here?  I ended up going back to the last saved area and then just avoid asking for the surrender.  It is pretty anoying.  Any comments on how to fix this? Its done this more than once.

Is this DL, DA, or TA?  And, what revision?

Wait wait wait... are you selecting the "surrender" option on the diplomacy screen? That's you offering to surrender, not demanding that they surrender (which is impossible, though in very rare cases you can take all their planets for peace, which is mostly the same thing). I did this once when I was very new to the game. If you do it, you surrender to the other guys, which explains why you're then destroyed.

I knew that DL and DA were as you described, but I was not sure if TA was also that way - - hence my Q.

In short, in SEIV and MOO2, one could demand a surrender.  One cannot do that in GalCiv2.

Excuse me for being stupid here, but what is DL, DA and TA?  And I am not the one surrendering. Also what is SEIV and MOO2?   I'm asking them to surrender and it is in GalCiv2.   Oh  I have the CD version.

quiet; they are GalCiv2: Dreadlords and its two expansions Dark Avatar and Twilight of the Arnor, the other two are Space Empires 4 I believe and Masters of Orion 2, both games in the same genre that competed with GalCiv2 when it came out.

It is as DoomBringer90 said.  That is, Gal Civ2 originally came out as DreadLords (DL).  Then, a revised version was issued, Dark Avatar (DA).  Lastly, the Twilight of the Arnor (TA) version came out.

Each of the three versions - DL, DA, and TA, for short - have different features, mainly adding features and complexity with each successive version.  I have played DL and DA, bit not TA, so I was not prepared to rule out that some sort of "demand surrender" feature had been added to TA.

The other games (SEIV and MOO2) are/were turn-based, space expansion 4X games like GalCiv2 but had several differences, one of which was that both could be played multiplayer.  They had many similarities, such as the ability to design ships based on research choices, and differences, such as tactical control of space battles.  Google is your friend here, just search on MOO2 and/or SEIV.  MOO2 came out around 1996 and SEIV around 2002, IIRC.

DoomBringer90 and LRjim,

Thanks for explaining the acronyms..  I just have the basic GalCiv 2 game installed with the lastest updates.  I guess I should have included the basic info in my first message.  And I will check out the other expansion packs.

I have had this game for over a year, but never really played it until now.  (Too busy playing Sins (all three) and Mass Effect)   But since I had surgery a week ago and have plenty of time on my hands, I decided to start playing some of the games I bought but I have not played.

This game wasn't what I expected, but it does burn up  a lot of time.   It took 7 complete defeats before I got the upper hand in playing (didn't understand the building your own ship feature until then), then this anomally showed up.  I wonder if it is just a glitch in the software?  I've also had times when the game just quit, no reason just quit.  Is that a basic game issue or does it do that on the expansion packs too?  I have pleanty of computer power, so I have ruled that option out.

I am no expert on what the latest revision is to which game, especially when it might be the earlier games.

You might ask the Q separately, in a new thread.  That is, "What is the moste recent revision # of ..." then insert your game title (Dread Lords, or Dark Avatar, or Twilight of the Arnor).  You might add the revision # that shows on the bottom left of your load-up screen, and see if you get confirmation in replies.  You see, IIRC, one had to use Impulse to get the last revisions, and some of those fixed some crash bugs, especially the overload ones.

End of qrtxian's quote

This.  You say "And I am not the one surrendering.", but the only "Surrender" option available for negotiation is your surrender.  That is, if you choose "Surrender" from the list of options on your side of the table - the side where you choose what you are going to give to them - you are offering to surrender.

You simply cannot demand that another civilization surrender to you.  There is no "Surrender" to select on their side of the table.  The only way to "demand" a surrender is to beat your opponent down to the point where they are willing to trade all of their remaining planets to you for a peace treaty.  You don't directly negotiate a "Surrender", but the results are the same.
