Please open your debug.err file in notepad, and copy/paste the contents into a post here. This will give us some technical information that can help troubleshoot your problem. The location you'll find the debug.err in varies depending on which game you're playing:

Dread Lords: My Documents\My Games\GalCiv2
Dark Avatar: My Documents\My Games\GC2DarkAvatar
Twilight of the Arnor: My Documents\My Games\GC2TwilightArnor

Older versions may store the debug directly in the location the game is installed at.

Be sure to copy the debug immediately after the error occurs; if you start the game again, the debug will be erased and recreated for the new session.

I Purchased GC 2 Ultimate recently and had similar issues loading under Windows 7. The Game would NOT load correctly via the launcher. However, I found that I could open Dread Lords from the ".exe" directly rather than the loader. This is possibly due to a working configuration from a previous install of Dread Lords (only). This didn't work for Dark Avatar or Twilight though. On a hunch, I checked the "Prefs.ini" in all three and found that for the expansions the default values weren't working. After changing the following lines in "Prefs.ini" for both expansions to match those of Dread Lords, all will load from the associated ".exe".

*** start copy ***

DisplayWidth=1680
DisplayHeight=1050
ColorDepth=32
Fullscreen=1
...

 Multisample=8

*** end copy ***

Sorry there was a typo in the above but I've since fixed it, however I didn't notice I could edit the above before I posted this "correction"! :-" Oops, live & learn. But just to re-iterate...

" The Game would NOT load correctly via the launcher. However, I found that I could open Dread Lords from the ".exe" directly rather than the loader."

Editing the "Prefs.ini" file did the trick for me, but may not be the whole answer to the problem.
