I recently saw this, and it made wonder if robots will ever gain sentience and oppose us. Needless to say I would be terrified if I ever ran into Big O. Without further ado...

 

It's more-or-less impossible to say whether or not AI would be even remotely understandable by humans, let alone an entity which could/would eventually develop goals that were detrimental to humanity. There's also a great deal of debate on whether or not mankind will develop AI, and on the actual definition of AI in the first place.

Generally, there's "soft" AI, and "hard" AI. The hard stuff is what you're probably thinking of- the kind of machine which is self-intelligent, self-aware, and capable of completely autonomous operation- and of developing, and executing, it's own goals and plans. Soft AI is actually closer to what the clip you posted displays, IMO- AFAIK, the robotics systems that were shown appeared to be acting autonomously- but the actions appeared to be more in line with executing previously given orders that are no longer relevant, perhaps because the circumstances- and infrastructure- which created the systems no longer exists.

That second part is actually quite relevant- if the supporting infrastructure is no longer present, it's very likely that the "off" button is no longer in existence.

This all being said, I'm doubtful that robots would "gain" sentience/sapience- AFAIK, it's actually not possible. For an AI to be truly self-aware, I'm pretty sure that it would have to be designed- and programmed- that way. Programming a warmachine, such as, say, a giant robot that destroyed whatever you told it to- or was designed to seek&destroy an enemy without external input, would be make it a weapon- and weapons, by design, are not intended to question their existence. That latter point is something that a robot would  need to do in order to become sentient- it has to be able to ask the question of the whats&whys of it's existence, and it's place in the universe, in order to actually figure out the answers to those questions.

But wouldn't the designers want the weapon to be sentient? That the Robot/weapon could analyze and adapt to the situation without outside help. And if left alone long enough, if it had started to ponder around its place in the universe couldn't it lead to becoming renegade?

 

Also I don't believe that this will happen anytime soon, and perhaps never at all. But what if technology did progress enough, and someone with enough brilliance came up with such AI? I just kinda of like the what if questions anyway.

 

Also what do you mean by infrastructure? Do you mean the robot, or about how human cities/towns.etc would be?

The ability to operate without outside input, and sentience, are two very very different things. You don't actually need to be self-aware to have the ability to analyze/adapt to the situation at hand- it's certainly probable that any robot that has enough intelligence (which isn't the same as sentience/sapience, BTW) to be autonomous would have been programmed to analyze/adapt to any situation it might come against that is unexpected- within the subset of situations for which the robot is designed. That last bit is italicized because it's very important- a combat robot isn't going to know how to react to possible threats starting to breakdance- but if said threats are shooting at it, or something the robot is assigned to defend, it'll know how to react.

So it's highly unlikely that a robotics system that is intended to be a weapon would have the ability to consider it's place in the universe- in order to maximize efficiency, it would simply lack the programming, software/hardware architecture, and the ability to adapt to analyzing a situation such as "what is my place in the universe"- in part because it already knows its' place- and that place is to kill things.

It is an interesting question/topic- and I agree, it's unlikely to happen within the next, say 10 years, IMO. And when it comes down to it, I'm doubtful we'd be able to create a self-aware, sentient, sapient, AI, because we don't even understand what makes humans tick- and figuring out how the human brain works has, AFAIK, been a major field in AI research.

I mean the systems for directing and supporting the maintenance and operation of said combat robot. For example, the control room that houses the controls which tell a robot of such scale as depicted in the clip you posted that "no, you can't kill that", and "yes, you can kill that". Such a large and destructive weapon- at least if we assume the capabilities depicted are indeed accurate- would be more likely to be treated as a strategic weapon, one which requires human intervention- but is also capable of autonomous operation.

With no "no, you can't kill that" button, it would likely default to "kill everything" mode, if it is intended as a strategic weapon with MAD [Mutually Assured Destruction*] type deployment.

*MAD was what kept the Cold War of the 1950s-1991 era from turning "hot"- it's the understanding that if one side launched their nukes, the other side would detect it and counter-launch, and both sides would be nuked to oblivion.

Ok, thanks for clearing the infrastructure matter up, now I see what your saying. Its not letting me quote, but about your comment on that we won't ever be able to build fully sentient AI I must disagree. You use that we don't understand the human brain, I believe that over time we will figure out how the brain works. And then, probably at a much later date, we might figure out how to create the AI. Now don't get me wrong, I expect to be long dead by the time this comes around, but I believe that humans will be able to create one eventually

I'm not saying we won't have AI- but I personally think that it will be more akin to a Turing computer. That is, a computer which can mimic humans so well, that if you never knew it was a computer, you'd assume that it was a human. I'm doubtful that we'll be able to create something that is totally self-aware, and sapient (which is actually different from sentient; humans, for example, are sapient).

I'm also doubtful we'll unlock every little detail about the brain's inner workings. I'm certain that we've made monumental progress, and will continue to make progress- but that there will always be something that will elude our understanding.

Synthetic sentience is inevitable....;p
