gog.com is going down

Wow. I just downloaded MoM and MOO 1&2 and then the announcement hit. Brad should consider taking this service over, it is really good for old games.

Here is their announcment:

Dear GOG users,

We have recently had to give serious thought to whether we could really keep GOG.com the way it is. We have debated on it for quite some time and, unforunately, we have decided that GOG.com simply cannot remain in its current form.

We are very grateful for all support we have recieved from all of you in past 2 years. Working on GOG.com was great adventure for all of us and an unforgettable journey to the past, through the long and wonderfull history of PC gaming.

This doesnt mean the idea behind GOG.com is gone forever. We are closing down the service and putting this era behind us as new challages await.

On a technical note, this week we will put in place a solution to allow everyone to redownload their games. Stay tuned to this page and follow us on Twitter and Facebook for updates.

All the best,

GOG.com Team

Well that sucks.  That place was like walking down memory lane.  It is going to be harder to get my old school fix now.   :(

There is always hope for Impulse getting some of the titles. MoM, Lords of the Realm, Gabriel Knight... We already got MoO 1 and 2, right?

I think this is a joke. They will have a surprise for 2nd year anniversary or they will leave the beta. I hope that is a joke or I will miss the site really. :(

That's a real bummer. This was the only digi store I really considered truly DRM free, and they were doing a great service getting all these old games available and in usable formats again.

It seems a little strange to me that they would pull the plug, pretty much literally, overnight too with no warning of even a phase out.

I am really surprised that this happened.

R.I.P.

Man, that stinks. They were the only place that was truly DRM free. (Impulse is pretty good, but as far as I'm aware it still requires server contact to re-install your archives - if Stardock ever went this way, we'd be in trouble.)

I really hope you're right, acare84. I don't think they'd joke about this, but I hope that's what they're doing.

Well this is a fine mess..... I had no idea these guys existed until I saw this post.... telling me they no longer exist. Shame, too: I've always wanted to play a lot of the stuff from before I was born.

I think it would be a first that a distributor would unplug their server to play a prank on their customers.

Sucks but it looks like GOG is gone.

I had bought a few oldies there as well...

I'm really bummed. REALLY bummed by this. :(

As for classic titles, I know the Impulse group is working to get as many titles up as quickly as possible, it's usually just a legal thing.

Very sad day indeed, it was a great service :(

There's no such thing as "just a legal thing".

This is one of my two fears with using services like this.

1) Losing my acccount - more a concern with Steam than Impulse.  Something could happen and they lock/ban your account and the nightmare ensues of working to get it back.  Meanwhile not having to hundreds of dollars worth of games.

2) The service closes permanently.

For everyone who has purchased games from gog.com, I hope they quickly bring online the capability for you guys to re-download your games.

they say there will be something put up this week to do that.  Info for it will be on their twitter and facebook pages

If they manage to get servers online they should ask Valve to let them use part of their bandwith for a few days, because pretty much all their customers will want to download all games they bought ASAP and I dont think they can pay for that kind of bandwith and very few companies have such infrastructure available.

So I heard.

Wow! Shocking.  I made my first purchase there just a few weeks ago, since I did not want to screw around with trying to get my ancient copy of MoM running (much less find where I left it).

Why not impulse?

Brad should be on the phone with GoG to see if they can absolve GoG's game licenses.  Therefor getting rid of the "legal thing"  which by i mean getting all those licenses for dirt dheap...

Let's see:

- different pricing ( $5.99 and $9.99 )

- extras

- compatibility

Are Impulse offers these ?

why would the prices be different.

what extras

and compatibility would be worked out(steam would have to do the same anyway)

don't know what that last part means

It would be great if Impulse buy it. I was talking about just getting temp. bandwith so that users can download their games for the last time - if GoG is really dead. In such case I doubt that Impulse have good enough infrastructure (and available bandwith) to do it - maybe I am wrong, but I dont know what is Impulse“s server bandwith - Steam network have peak capacity slightly over 250Gb/s.
