So I have a lot of free time on my hands, and I also have StarCraft II. I want to make a Terran Dominion race, complete with their tech tree, buildings, ship designs and the like. I have a lot of stuff on my mind already, but I need your help filling up all the gaps.
So, for starters, tech tree. The extremely long, long, long techlines will be reduced greatly. Their total cost will, however, be kept. This is because I want to get as much of the Dominion into this with as little filler. I do not want to have a dozen different types of burst lasers. The guns will be differentiated into size classes, with no size scaling. I hope to have specific weapon systems for each vessel included. For example, the Wraith's Burst Lasers are nice and small and cheap, but they are only worth it on the cheap small craft. The larger hulls, which will be much more expensive than they are now, will have more room, and will be able to carry a different weapon, Burst Laser Battery. Leviathan, Behemoth and Minotaur class ships will be able to carry the humongous Yamato Cannon, which just won't fit on anything other than a full-size Battlecruiser.
So, the fleet. I want to use every single unit in the game, or at least give it a mention. And I want custom hulls. No more cargo, tiny, medium etc. But that presents me with a problem. See, I want to have a cheaper Tiny hull, but one that is NOT available to all the other races. I also don't want to have the other races' hulls. It's easy with the Medium, Large and Huge, as I can just make new research and entries for those, but everyone already starts with Tiny, Small and Cargo unlocked. How do I go about modding those without modding it for everyone else in the universe?
Anyway, here's the current ship lineup:
Colonization: Hercules class Colony Ship (no HP, good capacity)
Construction: SCV (cheap, no hp, almost good capacity)
Space Mining: MULE drone (cheap, no hp, almost good capacity)
Trading: Giant class (no HP, good capacity) (Remember the original StarCraft's opening cinematic? That ship.)
Invasion: Dropship (basic invasion pod), Medivac (advanced invasion)
Survey: Raven (low hp, almost good capacity)
Flagship: Since the Dominion has no Medium/Large/Huge ship, they also have nothing to upgrade their flagship to. Besides, nothing in StarCraft can be described as a "medium" ship. They're either small or huge.
Planetary Defense: Viking (good hp for it's size)
Interception: Wraith, Valkyrie (good range on both, but different defense/offense ratios and costs)
Light Attack: Banshee (good range, good damage, slower than Wraith or Valkyrie)
Logistics: Science Vessel (good hp, various fleet mods)
Battlecruiser: Leviathan, Behemoth and Minotaur (different sizes and costs, separated by techs)
The buildings are much easier. I can even use the images from SC and SCII for new buildings. For example, Basic Supply Depot, Supply Depot and Advanced Supply Depot replace Farms I, II and III. Manufacturing has the Factory, which is linearly upgraded with a Machine Shop, Tech Lab, Fusion Reactor and finally Tech Reactor, for a total of 5 different levels. Research has Academy, Engineering Bay, Armory, Science Facility and finally Fusion Core, which are the main research buildings for Terrans in StarCraft. I want to try and use the SC Starport for the Starport, but I don't know how to do that without affecting all the other races. Same for the Initial Colony/Command Center. Barracks, Bunkers and Missile Towers will serve as planetary defense structures. Entertainment will be handled with various interactive billboards (the talking Mengsk hologram), bars and various UNN buildings. I have no idea what to do about the $$ buildings, all SC has for that is the Command Center, and that is already the colony. Will have to think about this one.
Research is easy, at least. StarCraft and StarCraft II have a ton of description, fluff and lore that I can use, in addition to the game mechanics themselves. Government could start as a Colonial Command, and would then go through Confederacy and finally to Dominion. Since the Emperor is at the head of everything, I don't think they should have access to the most advanced government. One thing I want to axe, though, is Miniaturization. And sizemod for stuff. Most of the scaling will be handled by researching new hulls or better weapons, but all the ships in SC have a specific, limited complement of weapons. The most any ship has are a dozen burst laser batteries, two missile banks and the Yamato Cannon on a Minotaur class Battlecruiser. It will be far easier for me to just make everything fit neatly. Wraith with a good engine, three Burst Lasers and two Gemini Missiles, and some extra room for defense. Oh, right, defense. Terrans are not known for their shields. They have great armor, good missile defense, but only their larger vessels carry any shielding. Defensive Matrix is a very powerful shield, but is huge, and just does not fit on anything smaller than a Science Vessel or Battlecruiser. This will, I think, add an interesting twist to the Dominion playstyle. Also, Terrans use either lasers or missiles, very few spaceships have any kinetic weaponry. Only the oldest Leviathan Battlecruisers have some form of space cannon, and Vikings have Twin Gatling Cannons for ground work. The newest prototype Battlecruiser, the Loki, has a combination of lasers and highly advanced space cannons, so that should be there as well. So the Mass Driver line will not be rich for the Dominion, but it's weapons will be effective. However, the ground forces use kinetic weaponry almost exclusively, so there will be PLENTY of stuff there for soldiering upgrades.
Note: All the modding in this will be through the xmls and a few new icons for the buildings. No new meshes or models, because I'm not skilled enough with the tools required to do so in a reasonable amount of time. Haven't played this game in almost a year, and I haven't tried to mod it in about two years now... So I need technical advice, as well as ideas on what else I can add.
