Ascension Victory

I'm new to the game (LOVE IT BTW) and I'm working toward an Ascension Victory.

I have starbases built on all the crystals. It says in the manual, "Once enough energy is gathered, the empire will achieve victory by advancing to the next phase of existence." 

Do I just wait for this to happen, or do I need to do anything else - like build more starbases to boost the energy gathering?

The more starbases you have on the crystals (just to be sure, they are the white ones and not the multicolored resources, right?), the faster the countdown at the top of the screen will count down. However, if you have them all locked down, you just have to wait for the power to build up.

And the more crystals you have locked up and the closer to victory you are, the more the other civs hate you. It can turn into a brutal slog of a war.
