Text garbled + overlaid on each other

Hi.  I'm running GalCiv 2 Ultimate edition, and noticing this graphical problem.  The text in the context area (control panel, where all the info is presented at the bottom of the screen) flickers and is garbled, and when i mouse-over the 6 screen buttons at the bottom, they leave permanent tool-tip info boxes.  Also, when switching between various screens, chucks of text gets left over.  Basically it makes the game un-playable.  I'm playing this on a Lenovo Thinkpad T400 laptop, with Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family on-board graphics.  The driver is not the absolute latest, but pretty close.  I can't seem to update with the newer one because of this being my company laptop, and i get some error saying the driver(s) are not registered etc.  I'm running DirectX 9C, and everything seems to test properly in the DXDiag thing.  So I wonder if it's just the driver that's the issue, or something else.  I noticed someone else on this board with the same on-board graphics have the same problem, so perhaps an incompatibility issue?  Can anyopne suggest anything?  Here's a copy of my error log file thingy:

The driver is not the absolute latest, but pretty close.
End of quote

It's nearly two years old, and is the most likely issue.

I guess i'm screwed then.  I tried again:

A customized computer manufacturer driver is installed on your computer. The Intel Driver Update Utility is not able to update the driver. Installing a generic Intel driver instead of the customized computer manufacturer driver may cause technical issues. Contact your computer manufacturer for the latest driver for your computer.
Ohh well
