The iPad is Here, Will You Get One?

Whether you are interested in one or not, at least you can be thankful the rumors are done and that the much speculated iPad is announced.

For the most part, it really seems like a big iPhone or iPod Touch.  They also introduced the iBook Store which seems to obviously be going directly after the Kindle and the Amazon book store.   Base price is $499 with options like 3G connectivity and more storage space that can bring it over $800.

I’m still looking over the details, but it certainly is an interesting device, but certainly not game changing.  It won’t be out for a few months so I guess we have time to think about.

Lol I will definitely get the tablet however, I probably would get the model without the 3g, seriouly most of the places I go to will more than likely have wifi so 3g doesn't really matter to me as for the size, it will depend on when I become very desprate and how much I have saved up but seriouly $499 US just for the smallest model?!

Maybe a year or two after it comes out, we'll se about the price. As with Apple, maybe even waiting till the third year with the 3rd generation then I'll get it.

But when I do get it, I will fullfill its destiny by changing the screen view to the Star Trek interface LOL.

no thanks, pass! >_>

There are better ways to spend that kind of money.

Yes! LCARS style on a touch-responsive screen would be so cool.

The marketing of this damn thing is terrible though.  If it's got any kind of functionality, the campaign should be saying how you can use it to work and to play.  Finally you have a device that can keep track of your appointments, let you take notes at a meeting, and won't fry your lap.  You can do a crossword, read webcomics, and defend your civilization which is ever beset by barbarians.

I wouldn't be so sure. This *is* from Apple, after all, they've got something of a track record in that area.

So long as you pay for it. The reason I dislike it not having flash isn't because I love to see the wonderful ads every site throws at me, but because there's lots of games that are perfect time wasters that are made with it and posted all over the net for everyone to enjoy. Yeah, yeah, App Store and all that but that costs money, *real* money, which I wouldn't have to spend had they kept their NIH syndrome in check and put Adobe's little plugin in there.

And then there's the open-source games... Freeciv, Battle for Wesnoth, Nethack even! would've been awesome games to keep on such a device but alas, Apple's closedness bites us again in the rear. Perhaps some willing soul will port 'em for us and sell 'em on the Apple store but again, they'd cost real money too.

Me, I'm keeping my eye on MSI's upcoming Tablet PC, it looks like it'll take everything good about the iPad but combine it with an actual OS worth using.

Apple?

Hahaha, no.

A friend who works in tech security looked over the HP tablet pretty closely at CES - not ready for prime time in his opinion, even though Paul Thurott went a little gaga over it.

I'd consider the iPad only if it were capable of running (Windows) business apps & were reasonably priced.  If a competitor could come up with a Windows-capable tablet with a comparable-in-quality touch-glass display at less than $1k, there is a market, particularly in health care.  Power/battery life will be the determining factor even there, though.

As a glorified eReader, probably not.

Nope. I'll stick with my Ipod touch. It does every thing the Ipad does and fits in my pocket.

I have a feeling that most people are going to get the wifi instead of the 3g, seriously are you going to carry your iPad on the bus and using 3g?! Most place you are going to use your ipad, is either home, work, or the library which more than likely have wifi, so I doubt the 3g model is going to be popular

It's only $10 more than a similarly-sized Kindle and can do so much more.  If it's jailbroken, I'll seriously think about getting one.

Nope, my Sony Reader works just fine for me.

Can you jump a shark with it?

Well, I'm going against convention and I'm planning to order the 32GB wifi model. I usually lug my MBP with me, but I don't need all that power 95-percent of the time. At the same time, I like reading news and such on my iPhone, but the screen size and slow speed are a detriment. The iPad might fit the bill for my needs.

Ouch. Nice find. I do like MS Courier ... a foldable tablet. But Daiwa might be right. Healthcare has always used Tablets. Battery life is very important, there. Portability is as well.

The way it stands, the one app at a time and lack of multitasking is a critical defect. Healthcare would have use for a camera to photograph all manner of lesions or even problems arising in patient care.

It's current lack of multitasking, and lack of camera....nope.

Does anyone use E-readers to read magazines, newspapers, books, pdfs? I'm considering to buy one. It seems easy on the eyes and saves u carrying all those books on hollidays. What about the kindle?

GJDriessen...did a little looking and came up with.. 1. link  2. link 3. link

For the difference of about $100 (+/-) you're losing a lot of functionality...although, You'll need to do the side by side comparison, buying a Kindle just for vacations and then shlepping a lot of other devices and their chargers ... seems a bit of a drag....not that I'm a supporter of the iPad.

Perhaps the item woth considering is the one you didn't mention...the HP Slate which will be running a full version of W7, and seems would be more adaptable to multitasking that the iPad or Kindle 2 ... LINK.

I honestly don't see the point of spending $500 on an oversized Ipod Touch. Especially considering that nebooks run at $150-400 range now, and are a lot more versatile.

With that $500, I can spend $330 on a Pandora and save the rest. Now that's something worth buying. <3

nope, have no need for one and I like hard copy books checked out at the public library for free.

I stand with most of the people here and I won't buy an Ipad. I'd either buy an ipod touch or a HP Slate instead, both are more useful. Anyways, books just look great on a shelf in my house... and I must admit I'm proud of making sure every one of them still looks as good as new even after I've read them a few times. I don't think eBooks would keep me coming for more.
