Dreading the Dread Lords

So I am new to the Galactic Civilization series and all.  I just got a new computer a few days ago and wanted to try my first ultra gen game on it with GC2: Ultimate Edition on it.  I have played the first game of the series and enjoyed it but a problem occurs in both games.

 

Going with a bit of a theme, I play an evil race that is obsessed with Technology so my tech is usually much higher than others which gives some advantages.  I'm all for being in a winning position until the Dread Lord come.

 

In every game, the Dread Lords arrive out of nowhere and procede to decimate me.  Any attempt to fight back results in doing 1 point of damage to a single fighter while losing 3 Huge class ships.  I even go and try to customize the ships so they come out with something that shields don't stop.   It doesn't work...each game, I get completetly overrun by the Dread Lords and cannot do anything to stop them.

 

How do I stop this from occuring?  I'm all for crazy events in a strategy game but this is really silly to just get steamrolled by the same dread lords over and over.  I should at least be able to put up a fight.

Maybe you could disable events and if the game is selected on dread lord dominion hint that could also be why they are owning you.

The DLs tend not to escort their transports.

If your ships are faster, you can tease the DL warships to chase.

Try to invade before the DLs build the first ship.  In one game, I send cheap ships crammed with population towards the DL planet as I researched frantically Planetary Invasion, then refitted en route.

After some games, I no longer fear the Dread Lords.  I was a n00b at making ships and all that and now, I don't have too much trouble.

If they're really such a big problem for you, then set autosave on each turn and when they arrive, simply reload the previous turn. You have great chance they'll stay out.
