Multiplayer Desync Troubleshooting

Greetings testers!  We've been running into desync issues with Sins: Diplomacy that we could use everyone's help in tracking down. Please use the Sins of a Solar Empire Diplomacy Dev.exe while testing this out and clear out your Checksum folder (mentioned below) after each test.

In order to send us useful data, you'll need to modify your user.setting file located at:

XP: C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\Settings

Win 7/Vista: C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\Settings

Modify the following values to what's below:

CalculateCheckSumTickFrequency 50
CalculateCheckSumDetail 2
SaveCheckSumSnapShotsInGameTickFrequency 0
SaveCheckSumSnapShotsOnSave FALSE
IsCheckSumLoggingOn TRUE

If you get a desync, please zip up your Checksum folder (it'll be a directory at the location above) shortly after the desync occurs, along with your most recent save game and email it to [email protected] with the Subject: Diplomacy Desync.

Thanks in advance for your assistance. :)

d you have yours?

I'm still waiting for mine too. Although I know some people have theres

Do you have to get a checksum error? Because when I was playing, we didn't get any error, but we were desynced. I'll changed those values and try again.

What? I have none of those values in my setting folder. :S

Just a heads up.  In Entrenchment (not Diplomacy), I've been seeing lots of desyncs lately, and hearing alot about them too.  Its just in the last few days.  I think it started on Jan 7, the day the Beta 3 Diplomacy update went live.  Hopefully, this info will help you track it down.

Just started a multiplayer game this morning on the new .95 Beta 3 build and my friend and I have a serious desync issue.  At one planet, he saw the pirates attacking and I saw nothing though I had vision.  Everything was normal.  Also I saw pirates attacking one of his planets, we were allies, and he saw nothing.

Will start using the dev .exe to try and help out.

Currently Diplomacy desyncs in MP when a player clicks a mission offer button (either to pirates or to another player).

That is good to know.  I was trying to offer a mission to the pirates about that time.  Wanted to try it out.  Of course the did not like my 10000 offer to attack an AI planet!  Greedy pirates.  >:(

D'oh my friend and I just had this happen to us hardcore...we both looked at planets and saw completely different things. If I make the above settings changes and reload our save game will that produce some useful data?

I have a sync log for y'all!

I have only one machine de-syncing out of 3. Entrenchment v1.0 last night - 3 times at the 45 minute mark Systems of War against 3 Ai's

Now i understand the instructions about modifying the file : diplomacy.user.setting

So i assume that there will be a checksum folder or file created in this Settings folder ?? I can't see one there yet.

Win 7/ C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\Settings

Next question : Now do I now need ALL three of us to Sins of a Solar Empire Diplomacy Dev.exe ??

cheers

Only when you see the red-text will the folder be created.  Also, I'm pretty sure that desyncing is only possible against human players, but whatever.

red- text ? you mean a warning on the screen  ?

We play 3 on 3 AI's. One rotten machine (me ) went out of sync with the other 2 ( which remained sync'd ) guys

You'll know what I'm talking about when you see it.

I want to know how do you get this red text to appear....

So far between me and my friend, every one of our games today in diplomacy(both were bought today) desynched within the first 30 minutes.  We both have set the user.setting according to the original post, but no error message came up at all!

We've tried this with Entrenchment too.  Desynched but no red text.  We're getting quite frustrated with the desynch.  For people that can play(vanilla, entrenchment, diplomacy) in multiplayer and not desynch...  any tricks or advice?  like touch your nose and tap your feet 3 times while waiting for the game to start...

I hope the devs get to the bottom of this quickly so we can start playing multiplayer again.  As of now, we're lucky to get 1 game out of 10 tries that went all the way to the end without desynch.

my friend and I will try to play that with the sync.rar file.

just a question..since this didn't seem to be mentioned... auto-save need to stay on? or doesn't matter?

every desync we get is when pirates are attacking.

Hm I have an interesting... observation if you will.

So I tried the synrar file from Blair's post earlier with my friend.  We've noticed this:  It gives us a desync error right at the beginning of the game if we "restart" the game.

steps we did:

launch Sins entrenchment

log onto ironclad

one of us Host a game, set it up

start

look around the map, didn't like our starting positions, both of us quit the game

back to chat room, host another game, set it up,

start

We will get the "xxx player has been desync'd" whatever message as soon as the load screen is gone.  Everytime.

The screen dimmed and the "xxx player has desync" thing stays on the screen.  What's weird though is that while the screen is dimmed with that error message, we seem to stay sync'd.  I'd ask my friend to move his ships.  He'd move them, and then tell me which and where he moved... and it matches up.  Then I'd do the same with my ships.   And he sees what I've moved as well.  We didn't keep playing to see if we end up real desync later since the dimmed screen and the error message is very distracting.  Perhaps a question for people who desynced...  Was it a fresh game you started? Ie: hosting/joining first game after launching sins?  Or did you "restart" or perhaps finished a game and joining another?

After this episode, my friend and I made a point that we will relaunch sins whenever we start a game just as a test.  And once we started, we'll stick with whatever map position we're stuck with.  So far, we've gone through 3 games without desync .  Lots of "i just move xxx here.. do you see it?"  "I just colonized xxx, do you see it too?" "how many colonies do I have?" paranoia though! o_O

We didn't keep the checksum from earlier... Although I'm pretty sure we should be able to replicate the process to get them if you want it.

Please replicate and send the folder in.

ok my friend and I have some free time to go through the steps I outlined above and get a sync error log today.  It has been sent.
