Windows 7 Compatibility

Is GalCiv II ultimate edition fully compatible with Windows 7?  I am just hesitant to pull the trigger on upgrading until I know for sure my favorite games will work on Win 7.

Thanks.

I have Windows 7 Ultimate RC build 7100 and GalCiv II DL and DA both work, but it says my DX Accelerator is having problems.  It runs still though so if you can find a fix for the DX problem (may just be with the RC have not upgraded to the OEM version yet) then it would likely be a very fun experience :D

I just got this game a couple days ago, and am having problems with it and Windows 7.  I can't get it to update the game using Impulse.  I'll click on the icon for Impulse and it does nothing.  I then set it to run in Windows XP SP3 or SP2 mode and it says it's trying to run as administrator.  I choose both, let it, or restart it without administrator and nothing happens.

Game is also crashing when I start a new game.  I'll pick all my settings, then when it's calculating the galaxy it crashes to desktop.  Only runs when I choose certain settings or races.

I can't get Dark avatar or Twilight to work in windows 7

Please post your debug.err files. It's probably a common issue unrelated to 7.

Yes, that was a bug in Win7 RC. It's fixed on Microsoft's end and has been for a while.

Are you trying to run Impulse directly or via the game launcher? Also, if you did an upgrade install from Vista, you may need to reinstall Impulse after doing so. If you contact [email protected] about this or any further Impulse issue they'll be able to help.

Both, clicked on the desktop icon of Impulse and tried to update from the game launcher.  I formated the drive and intalled Windows 7 and GalCiv2.  So, they are both fresh installs.

I am having the same problem witn Windows 7 64 and DA/ToA. It can't recognize Directx, then tries to run and crashes out to desktop.

I would post a debug.err, but no such file exists on my hard drive. Every other game I own works perfectly fine.

I am running on Windows 7 (Home Premium) - I have had the game quit on me twice (once GalCivII & GalCivII-Ultimate) - Ubisoft want a couple files, one the DirectX Out Put; but I am in a quadry: the DirectX is up to 11; but, when you go to the DirectX page, it talks of 9.0c for Gamers!

Which DirectX should I have & be using, DirectX11 or 9.0c? Thanks

Plus, I'd like to Turn-OFF the Background -tried turn down the instensity; but that did not do it. Anything new to try?

Thanks Everyone - I and the Grand-kids have lots of Fun playing what we can when they come over -gives them another reason to come over.

I am going to switch to Win 7 Pro (64 bit) and would like to know if I will have any issues? Also is DX 10 backwards compatible? If I go from DX9c to DX10 will I still be able to play Gal Civ2 UE?

Thanks

I have Windows Home Premium installed and have problems with GalCiv2Ult., as well as Droplitz. GalCiv2 is more important, so will bring Droplitz up later if I can't get it to go at all.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled impulsenow/impulse, completely deleted and reinstalled GalCiv2-Ultimate, but after I get the small game start screen/menu select (play - edit - update - etc.) and select to play, it blinks a few times, screen goes black and then I get a message saying it is not working and windows is looking for a solution. after a minute or so, the searching popup comes back with a message that there is a problem and no solution. I'll be notified if one is found.

None so far.

Please help. I have a Intel Core2Duo 6300, 2GB RAM, Nvidia GT250 (completely updated as of yesterday), SoundBlaster X-Fi Extreme Gamer. not sure what other system specs might be helpful, but will gladly submit any requested

My thanks in advance for your assistance in getting me back up and running with this title.

Go to My Documents\My Games\GalCiv2 (or the DA/TA folders as appropriate), open the file prefs.ini, and make the following changes:

Change
DisplayWidth=1024
DisplayHeight=768
ColorDepth=32
Fullscreen=1

To
DisplayWidth=(Your desktop width)
DisplayHeight=(Your desktop height)
ColorDepth=32
Fullscreen=0

Then save the file and start the game.

Please open your debug.err file in notepad, and copy/paste the contents into a post here. This will give us some technical information that can help troubleshoot your problem. The location you'll find the debug.err in varies depending on which game you're playing:

Dread Lords: My Documents\My Games\GalCiv2
Dark Avatar: My Documents\My Games\GC2DarkAvatar
Twilight of the Arnor: My Documents\My Games\GC2TwilightArnor

Older versions may store the debug directly in the location the game is installed at.

Be sure to copy the debug immediately after the error occurs; if you start the game again, the debug will be erased and recreated for the new session.

Do you have the base game and DA both properly installed and updated?

Reply #16 Top

As far as i know yes. I have the galciv 2 gold version so it didn't install them seperatly, it installed the original game and dark avatar as one block. I installed twilight in the same directory as the gold edition.

Impulse does not however seem to register that i have galciv2, even when i point it to the directory with "detect game" It will however find dark avatar. But won't update it because it thinks gal civ 2 isn't installed. so no updates from impulse

Reply #17 Top

If you have DL/DA registered then, just try reinstalling them straight from Impulse if you're able to do the download. If you're on a quota or otherwise can't, please contact [email protected] for help with getting Impulse to detect them without a reinstall.

I reinstalled them through Impulse last night just before i posted on the forums, at that point it still wasn't working. I've tried again today and i am able to run dark avatar but only if i go to the home directory and use the application.

I dunno why impulse has such an issue with finding the games its a little frustrating. I managed to download the 2.01 update for dark avatar through it but then it said that it couldn't start the game.

Currently reinstalling twilight for the third time through impulse launcher.

thanks!

Very same problems I am having - I have also tried all the above with no success.  I have the ultimate edition (european), can play dread lords, but not DA or TA.  I am also very frustrated and disappointed, and would like to know when/if a fix for win 7 users will be released, because nothing else seems to work.

Reply #21 Top

If you're having issues with it, please post your debug.err file(s) or contact support. The game works fine on Win7 here and for many others.

Reply #22 Top

Btw, again this is the ultimate edition (european), and it looks like the Impulse download has not been applied although it definitely downloaded and appeared to install.  However, when I run Impulse now, I get a message that "impulse running as administrator" advising this is not a good thing, and to restart impulse as non-administrator.  When trying this, it says impulse has quit working.

But here is my debug.err report, which I honestly can't make heads or tails of.  Thank you for trying to help.

That's a normal close from the base game--if you're having trouble with the expansions, you need to post their own debug files.

Flippin' heck this is hard to get working in Windows 7 Home 64.

I tried the trick to reset the monitor resolution but doesn't make any difference for me - I can get as far as selecting races but when I try to start a game:  meltdown.

Any ideas?
