even slower tech speed?

After a year or two I'm back to galciv2 (with both expansions). Just completed my first game today on "slower speed".

After searching the forums and googling for about an hour, I couldn't find a single mod that makes techs more expensive beyond the lowest vanilla setting - and I'm wondering, why hasn't anyone done this yet?

On my quest to find said mod, I stumbled over quite a few posts by other players who, like me, prefer a game that takes weeks or even months to complete, where you can't research a tech in 1 week even on the slowest setting.

The only mod I could find that does anything even remotely in this regard was the "Slower start mod" (or something like that), which basically just decreases ship speed and makes a few other, minor changes.

So, why hasn't this been done yet? Is it too hard to do? Is there too few people who'd want to use it? Has it been done and I just couldn't find it?

Here, i'll give you a different challenge... play some of my X-Worlds (#06-A) mod and get exclusive control over all 30+ Trade-Goods available. Reach for a TechVic, only btw too! Dare, spying on opponents with the enhanced ways. Etc.

Techno speed alterations is one thing, context & new gameplay elements another.

You could give a huge penalty to ALL the game races to research that would make the trick no?

I haven't looked at the files in awhile, but I'm very sure that you can open up the xml files for research, and add to their cost. The higher the cost, the longer it will take to research it. Play with the numbers until you get what you like. 8)

thanks for you replies

I just tried editing the raceconfig.xml to give all races a -100 penalty to research, but it doesn't quite work... it says "-100 research" in the race selection screen (except for the last played race, in my case the terrans) but in game, the research times are still the same.

Here's one of the posts I've saved that may help you out.

Increasing research costs the easy way

By Braddock8 Posted June 24, 2008 01:02:26

For some people, myself included, "Very Slow" research times just aren't quite slow enough. Particularly if you like long, drawn-out games on Gigantic and Immense galaxies.

The solution is simple, but tedious. Go through all the tech trees and manually increase the cost of each and every tech in the game. Well, I really don't have the patience to do that, so I came up with an easier way.

Open up TechTree.xml with a text editor (i.e. Notepad). You'll find it in the GalCiv2\Twilight\Data\English directory for Twilight, GalCiv2\DarkAvatar\Data\English for Dark Avatar, or GalCiv2\Data\English for Dread Lords.

First thing you need to do is save a backup copy, for when you want to go back to normal research speeds.

Now, open up the editor's Replace tool, and replace every instance of "</Cost" with "0</Cost" And that's it. With a single mouse click, you've increased all the research costs tenfold. For Twilight of the Arnor, you'll also need to do this in each race's individual tech tree file. Again, remember to save backups.

For comparison's sake, I recorded the different research times for Terrans' Artificial Gravity at the very beginning. I used a Large map with common everything.

Original speeds:
Very Fast: 5
Fast: 6
Normal: 8
Slow: 11
Very Slow: 22
Increased Speeds:
Very Fast: 52
Fast: 62
Normal: 78
Slow: 111
Very Slow: 225
