How do you make transparent logos ?

Does anybody know how make transparent logos eta photoshop 7/or Corel painter X I used to know how but forgot so any help would be appreciated.

Just be sure that there is no "background" layer (you'll see a checkered backdrop instead), and save it as a PNG.
