Patch or no patch , the MoO3 real time combat still ruins the 1/2 of the fun (not because it's real time , theoretically real time could be good too :) ) .
It's better not to have combat like in GalCiv then release ugly and almost non-interactive thing like in MoO3.
(But I still miss a combat and ship design in GalCiv :) ).

For anyone who cares, MoO3 is now -$2.01 at Amazon. They'll pay you two bucks to take it from them. [edit] Whoops, sorry, didn't see this had already been posted! The news is so incredible, it's worth hearing twice.

Moo3 after the patch is a really good game now, its still got a few quirks but then again so has Galciv. The main difference is Moo3 feels like you are controlling a vast space empire while Galciv plays like a board game.

If this game is sooooo good now then why is Amazon paying you to take it off their hands. Why has it been panned by every major gaming publication on and off line? Why do they still tell you thier will be another patch coming?

I'm glad you like the game. Comparing it to GalCiv is unrealistic and saying it is a better product is moronic.

Exactly how is it 'unrealistic' to compare GalCiv and MOO3? They are both strategy games, both set in space, both empire building, and both turn based. If they were any more similar, they'd #(@$ near be the same game!

As for saying which is the better product, that's a matter of personal opinion. But, shock, gasp, HE DID NOT SAY WHICH GAME HE THOUGHT WAS BETTER! So calling him a moron for something he didn't even say... well, that sure makes you look like the moron here, jus4golf.
Both games being turned based and set in space does make them in the same genre. That is when the similarty ends. GalCiv was palyable straight from the box while MOO3 was an Alpha version posing as retail.

Also for the record I did not refer to anyone as a moron nor any other nasty name. I stated that the idea of MOO3 being a better game was moronic. Whether that is his opinion, yours or mine it is still moronic. It is not just my opinion it is a superior game it is also the majority of the TBS game buying public's as well all media outlets that have reviewed both games.

just wondering, what is the differences between moo3 and galciv? i never played any of the moo games before, and im wondering how they differ. reading the reviews of moo3 hasnt helped me, all i got from those was a lot of flak about the micromanagement, but nothing of what exactly the gameplay is like.

The two games are completely different. To get a feel on how it works, you need to either purchase the game, get the demo, or watch another person play it.

I have played a few turns of the game myself (before my spawn install crashed) but I should have a feel on how the game works. The game attempts to maximize realism by including as many features as possible. It also allows splitting production and research into seperate fields, as opposed to GalCiv's one-size fits all approach.

The flak about micromanagement was actually based on the poor user interface. Although micromanagement is acceptable in this kind of game, it becomes annoying when there are factors that inhibit such micromanagement.

The data patch and the code patch have no compatibility problems regardless of whatever the disclaimer said. I installed the game, installed the data patch, then installed the code patch (a few hours later after it was released), and played... no problems (the game didn't crash even with 3 solid days of play on a really old machine, that's even more stable than GalCiv for me, and rather impressive for something written in C++).

GalCiv is a nice 4x space strategy game (reminiscent of a boardgame). It's fun (to the right kind of person), has respectable depth, a good UI, and can take a while (particularly the larger map sizes) but generally not overly long.

MoO3 is a mean 4x space strategy game. It's fun (to the right kind of person), is insanely deep, has a workable UI (since the patch, at least), and can suck up a week of your life on a relatively small map.

There's also the matter of learning curves, but in my case I found MoO3 to be not much harder than Galciv to learn the basics of... in fact, I know more about the inner workings of MoO3's economics system than Galciv's... so I'm not qualified to speak on that point.

To put it succinctly:
GalCiv: LOL
MoO3: :D ... (after a few hours/days) :SURPRISED:

Well, I blasted MOO3 after it was released. I am not going to sing its praises now, but I think it is silly to dismiss it out of hand, if you really are a 4x fan. I mean cripes.. its free! It *would* be foolish to not pick it up, if you are a fan of the genre.

It is very complex, and many AI issues are fixed, which was the main problem it had. The diplomacy is much repaired, altho there is still weirdness to be had. All in all tho, I would say get it cheap while you can. 4x games thankfully are like wine, they get better with age. The modding community and hopefully further patches make it so.

Of course, that is a good point: if you get MoO3 from Amazon you can get a rebate for slightly more than the price of the game. You can get free shipping too if you buy 5-6 more dollars worth of stuff (get a book, reading's good for you ;) ).

MoO3 ain't perfect by a long shot, but it's a very impressive game and if you're at all interested in 4X's (likely if you're on GalCiv's forum) the game is *certainly* worth the low, low price of free.

Whether it's worth the time to play, that depends on your priorities. edit - btw, I think the Amazon offer only applies if you buy the game by the 14th (Saturday).

OK. I'll say my piece and move on. Moo3 aint that bad with the patch. It stll has problems (it aint perfect but no game in the universe is) such as very little feedback from diplomatic interaction...they could easily learn a lesson in feedback from GalCiv...and the AI is still wary on invading planets. But you know what? No disrespect, but the AI in GalCiv has never invaded any of my planets either. Maybe its because I play on the lower difficulty levels. I play on easy in Moo3 also. Post patch, the AI will put up a good fight and they will attack with strong forces vs the asinine one or two ship probes that always got destroyed prepatch. The game is still not what I expected but its not the disaster for me that so many others have beat their chests and moaned about. Its really very simple: there is no absolute way to measure if one game is better than the other (that goes for ANY game.) Its all personal. One person can hate a game, and the other love it. Who is right? One could make a case by listing the number of folks that like one game vs the number of folks that like another (as in: more people seem to hate it Moo3 than like it.) BFD. A whole lot of people drive the Ford Taurus and a whole lot of people think Ruben was the better singer. AND??? That doesnt mean I will ever want a Taurus (I wont) nor do I think Ruben is the better singer (I dont.) Who cares? Give it up. Let it alone. Dont make this board like the Moo3 board. It is suprememly arrogant to decry one game SUXXORS because you dont like it...that implies that the folks who like the game you feel is so lame dont know anything about games or at least are not as COOL as you because you know which games are good and bad. You dont. You know which ones you like and which ones you dont like. (The "you" by the way is not aimed at any individual, its just used to make a point.)
Different people like different games. I personally like them both. I hate and detest RTS games...that doesnt mean they suck or that people who play them them suck. It means I hate them; because they bore me and are all the same in my opinion. And thats all it means.
This may have have been clarified earlier in the posts so forgive me if I did not read every last one of them, but Alan Emmerich, if he is in fact the one who got a job teaching video gamses, had little or nothing to do with the sad state of Moo3 as he left the project. Some say it went downhill from there.

Anyway. I should have called Bobo up from the cellar. He could have gotten his point across in one paragraph but what the hell. I mean no offense to anyone: either those that love/hate GalCiv or love/hate Moo3 (or any other game.) Theres room for all kinds of games (except RTS damn it...just kidding)because the world is full of all kinds of gamers. Leave it at that.
Rant over. Game on.

wampyre,

I've had the computer invade my worlds. In fact, in one game, I had the Arceans invade the same world three times in a row - they invaded, it flipped culturally, they invaded...etc.

The rebate slip said 3 per product or some such... you could still get a bit more than you pay for shipping, but you could probably make more money doing something else with the time.

OK, my profound and obviously (un)important opinion on MOO 3:

When they remake it into a real MOO 3 Gold, I will play it. I have the original, and played the original for over a month after its release (modded and unmodded). I have a feeling they are going to try and pull off a BattleCruiser 3000 Millennium edition thing by totally remaking a bad game into a good one, but it will take time. Time that I will spend on Galciv instead. (In fact, I am one of those people who wouldn't have found Galciv unless it were for MOO 3's deficiencies.)

If moo3 was free I would consider it. :d If I had not already bought the worthless game. LOL This was the biggest let down since I bought Battle Cruiser 2000. LOL In case you do not know that game, is was the biggest flop of any space simulation to date. :D

Phaedyme-thanks for the info on the AI invading your planets...I have something to look forward to.

To all who say Moo3 is a flop, thats all opinion and I grant you yours. However, if you believe the game is bad based on your own playing experience, then it is bad as far as you are concerned. Aint nobody gonna talk you out of your view and nobody should. If you beleive its bad because of press, thats too bad because the only valid review would be your personal review; you should make up your own mind and not have it made up for you. There have been many times I bought a game based on "good press" and hated it. There have also been times I bought a game that didnt receive good press (most of the time AFTER I bought it) and I found I liked it. Go figure.

Gerakken- I never played Moo3 with mods. I am playing it now with the patch and it is better. Will it change your mind? Maybe not. Depends on how much you dislike the game. However, since you already paid for it, might be worth your time to install the oatch and see for yourself. Or not.

Just4golf-no big deal. I wasnt meaning to point a finger at any individual, the statement was a genral one. Hey, all of us have beat up on a game or praised one too much in our time, myself included. The fact that you apologized for it shows some character. Way to go. Bobo read your reply and he told me to tell you he loves you long time.

MoO3 ... they made a lot of mistakes but the main one - it's just not fun :) , patch made it a bit better but it still no fun , if you ask my rating I would rate MoO3 2/10 before the patch and 6/10 after , while to GalCiv I gave 8/10.

After reading that you can get Moo3 for free from Amazon yesterday, I was thinking about if I should get it in spite of all the bad stuff I've read about it.

Tonight I dreamed that I had it and was playing it for the first time. I remember that in my dream, I really liked the different aliens, but wasn't able to finde the screen where I could build colony ships and I woke up quite confused. LOL

LordKiron- there aint no good guy, there aint no bad guy. There's only you and me and we just disagree.

But that's ok. It is what it is. I'm with you 100% on the GalCiv rating though.
