Crossing the Divide

I'd never bothered with 64bit before, it was always just that little bit too geeky and misunderstood. Luckily with the advent of Windows 7 i thought "hell, why not?" and decided to give it a go.

Obviously the big upside to this is the support of larger memory, so I decided on a new set of Crucial Ballistix Tracers which showed up today (pushing me up from a respectable 2gb to a more beefy 4gb), threw them in and WOW.

Loading times for levels etc have dropped almost by half, Framerates are up in most of my games, Windows and the various programs on it now open almost instantly with barely a rotating egg timer in sight.

So, if anyone is looking for a quick boost to your PC for a reasonable price I can't stress enough. 64bit and the memory to take advantage of it is probably your best bet.

How much RAM is too much? I always thought that going 64bit was smart if you wanted like 8-16GB of RAM. With 64bit, can you even utilize that much? Is it overkill?

BTW: That's awesome bro. Always love to hear when people's computers perform better =]. It's like a happy ending.

Never a happy ending when you have to spend money, still bang for buck it takes the prize (until i can get the SSD drives i want )

Theoretically 64bit supports upto 16 exabits (about 17 billion gigabytes) and from what i gather doesn't throw it all in the pot, rather each program can be allocated upto 4gb so even running two hardcore programs at full tilt wouldn't need more than 8gb...i'd say that is the threshold for too much from a gaming perspective at least. Though to be sure...we have any 16gb totting Gamers?

But even with 4gb you'll definately see improvements switching from 32-64bit.

Yah bang for your buck is great. But I meant a happy ending as in you got the bang instead of paying for the bang, but getting...not a bang?
