Favorite Race Traits (DL Only)

I am fairly new to GalCiv. I bought DL recently and I've already been beaten into the ground once and achieved victory twice on Normal. I've been playing around with creating Custom races and I just wanted to know what everyone's favorite (DL) race traits were that they use points for.

I wanted to try the Speed trait, but it soaks up a lot of points and I was wondering if it was worth it in the long run.

So far I have focused my points on Economics and Research, I just started a new game with a Custom Race ("The Merchant Guild") who have all the points in Economics, Trade Routes and Trade Income.

Really, I just want to know which traits are totally worthless and which are pretty decent. I like to challenge myself and either make my customs balanced or make them so overspecialized that they need to work at other areas, but I just dont have the experience yet to say which traits are powerful and which are not.

In DL I prefer Economics, Morale and Population, in that order.  Also choose Federalist for the economic bonus.  Economics increase tax income, Morale allows a higher tax rate while still growing the population and Population incresases tax income.

Speed is worthless.  Research can be "bought" with bonus tiles and structures.  I have never used Trade since I always play for a military victory...who would I trade with?}:)

edit: btw, welcome to the forums. |-)

That's a good place to start. Haven't played DL or DA in such a long time, so just took a look at it again. One of my old custom civs on DL was +30 Econ, +20 moral, +30 population growth, and Federalist for another +20 econ. Same as what Jacklv takes by the looks of it.

Absolutely, positively.

Also even more important than your racial ability picks are the inherent abilities of the race you pick.

In DL your ability points cannot be used to increased inherent abilities, if you try you simply lose the inherent bonus and its value is replaced by whatever you selected with your ability points. In DA/TA this has been changed so that any ability points you spend simply get added to whatever inherent abilities that the race has.

The Economics, Morale and Population theme is in reality simply an economics theme because higher morale allows you to have higher taxes and hence more income for any particular approval level and since your tax income is determined by your population the faster you can grow your pop the faster your income will grow.

In line with this theme the hands down best races in DL are the Torians with the Drengin as a close 2nd. This is due to these races inherent 25% morale bonus which is free and better than you can get by spending max ability points (3 points = 20% morale bonus).

This allows you to spend 4 points on the 30% economics ability and 6 points on the whopping 70% pop growth ability which is the DL equivilent of Super Breeder, along with these races inherent 25% morale ability.

In any other race my choice is essentially 4 points for 30% econ, 3 points for 20% morale and 3 points for 30% pop growth.

All in all those are really the only two reasonable choices and the only real reason to go with a race limited to 30% econ, 20% morale and 30% pop growth is if you're choosing the Yor for their inherent miniaturization and starting techs or the Drath for thier inherent 25% diplomacy along with their free 50% defense and 25% miitary production bonuses. The other races in DL are basically just weak sisters to these four choices.

The Drath are a good race if you are playing for points..as oppposed to just beating the AI.  I played Custom for a period of time but given the starting techs and bonuses, it is not the best choice.  The only reason to play Custom that I can see is to get the Custom Medal.  This was the first medal I recieved, at the time, I didn't even know why.  IIRC the Custom Medal is only DL.

Where can I find a page that describes all of the medals, how to get them, what they look like etc etc?

Not that I'm aware of.  The search function here is better than it once was, but I still use google advanced site "forums.galciv2.com".  You might be able to find something.

Can you see my metals?  You need to sign in through GalCiv II forum for them to display.

To find this go to the Metaverse and select the Galactic Databank menu and then legend from the pulldown tab. Not that this ist totally correct or tells you precisely what you need to get each medal.

There have been a number of threads discussing various aspects such as how many victories you need to achieve each particular rank among other things. Try searching "metaverse medals site:forums.galciv2.com" on google.

Here's one such thread. That's all I found to be useful but if you spent some time tweaking your search I'm sure there have been many others.

Why is pop growth important. A smaller planet can enjoy the benefit of 100%/75% approval for a longer time, getting a free pop growth bonus. And sooner or later they are maxed out anyway.
