CN is a pretty cool online game.  forgive me if I sound like an ad

Cyber Nations is a free online game that models nations at war/peace.  There, you can create your nation, help it grow, raid your neighbor, and even become involved in a huge inter-Alliance war, involving hundreds of nations.  Fight your battles with soldiers, tanks, aircraft, cruise missiles, spies, and even the all-powerful nuclear missile.  manage your finances with trades to access other resources, giving you benefits to your military and economy.  Ensure your populace remains happy, else they may decide to quit working for you.  for a better description, look at the link above, or this one:

Gah!  I lost over a year of my life playing that bloody game.  I had to quit cold turkey, else I'd have gone mad -- MAD, I tell you!!

well, a little bit of a necropost, but They've updated it some, so it's a bit more fair. and with more options, it's more interesting for the old die-hards. 

plus there's an "Invite your friends" thing now, so you get bonuses when people you invited play
