War Profiteering for the win?

Hello space fans,

 

I bought the game a few days ago and really enjoy it.  Having said that, I am wondering if my first play-through was just a fluke or if certain strategies may be a bit overpowered against the AI.

On normal difficulty, I researched war profiteering as the lizards and was bringing in hundreds per turn while the galaxy went to war with one another.  Bought the game's PreCursor Ranger off the Altarians for $30k and used it to quickly defend against any civs who DOW'd me.

Built up a superior military that I never used, waited for all but 3 races to remain and then forced a diplomatic victory via bribery.

Fun but also seems a little lame and broken - didn't think I should be able to win normal on the first play through, and I don't consider myself anywhere near an ubergamer or so on.  Thoughts?

It could be a fluke. However War Profiteering is quite useful as it is an advantage you don't want to skip. It can easily make the super ability "Super Manipulators" a very profitable advantage. Getting an income ammount equal to roughly 11% of the total income of each civ at war is quite handy. Its one of the few times in this game that good shows it isn't dumb, and is quite prepared to hold its own against other idealogies.

Try tough difficulty next time. Thats the hardest the AI can go before it "cheats".

Also the Drath (or lizard folk as you call them) is one of the few civs that can get any war profiteering bonus. Consider another civ such as the Terrans, or Drengin. They will play differently and don't get war profiteering bonuses.

I would also say it's mostly because you play on "normal" difficulty, plus a lot depends on which AI races you were playing against, which size of galaxy, whether tech trading was enabled or not, ...

As soon as you play on "tough" or any harder difficulty, you'll notice it's no longer easy to keep up with the AI in terms of research or building your military.

Normal difficulty in this game isn't full AI capability.   The AI doesn't start cheating till past tough.   So "tough" is what normal is usually.

One thing to remember about war profiteering is that if you start conquering, the money you get from it actually starts to sink.  I had a game where I had an amazing economy, after getting all the other civs to fight each other while I stayed out of the battle.  But eventually I was attacked, and as I began to conquer my economy began to drop, both from having more ship maintenance, some of the AI's getting peaceful, and because I was conquering the guy with the biggest economy.  Eventually I got into fiancial trouble and it took me a while to get out.

 

Lesson....Don't forget that the war profiteering money can disappear

Actually  the ai does cheat even on tough category because they seem to know the fog of war so your chances of colonizing a planet that is around the same distance apart from each other is next to none!
