Tired the AI is cheating threads
from
Stardock Forums
*Begin rant*
I think I've had my limit reading threads and messages on this forum about how the AI supposedly "cheats." I'm tired of it. Every computer game ever made has built-in AI advantages to off-set the vast power that human intelligence gives us. If there weren't these advantages given to the computer, it would never win.
Lets take the extreme example of the Deep Blue or ASCII White chess computers. You could easily argue that they "cheat" because they can evaluate so many more possible positions that a human can, but you know what? That's the only way they can beat a good human player. Games that don't run on multi-million dollar custom computer systems, like GC, need even more advantages besides raw processing power to be competitive.
Part of the problem, as I see it, is that some on this forum think any advantage given to the computer means the AI is "cheating." Here's the definition of cheating from the dictionary that I think is appropriate here: "to violate rules dishonestly." This is something a computer cannot do. Either the programmers made "a cheat" that way on purpose, so therefore it's not dishonest, or it's a bug - and therefore an unintentional effect that should be corrected.
So please, stop with "the AI is cheating!" nonsense. If you don't understand why or how the AI does something, post and ask for an explanation and someone will at least try and give you one.
*End Rant*
Now before everyone sets their pants on fire, I do realize there are legitimate issues with respect to how AI players trade with other AI players, and that AI's seem to get techs without prerequisites, etc. There are others as well. These are issues that are being dicussed and addressed in order to determine if they are bugs or not. It's not helpful to anyone to whine about "AI cheating" in these threads. It is helpful to patiently and calmly discuss whatever you've observed that seems out of whack in an effort to improve the game.
Thank you for your time,
