gripes, complaints, and questions from newb

I am using Ultimate Edition and I have never played any Galactic Civ before this.  It is really awesome but...

the scout ships that are available for building right away.  So useless.  Slower than my granny with her walker and cannot even survey!

custom settings for a new game like number of habital planets, etc.  The game seems to ignore these and does what ever the heck it wants.   I have to start a new game over 10x over and over just to get a map that actually has an abundant # of habital planets.

my turn button vanishes sometimes.

my starbases vanish sometimes.

I had a question and now I forgot it.  I'll post it when I remember.  Don't get me wrong, this is a trully "living legend" of 4x games right up there with the venerable Sids Civilization.  But somethings are so wrong with this awesome game that they stand out.

I never build scouts.  As you say, they are kind of useless.  You're better off scouting with ships that other specific uses.

I have not had a problem with the settings not being correct, so I cant help you there, and I dont have vanishing starbases either.

Sometimes when the turn button disapears, the game is stuck on procssing orders for a certain ship.  If that's the case, just hit space-bar to skip that ship's turn and the game turn will process.  If that is not the case, close down the game, open it up and reload.  I suggest turning on auto-save so you always have something recent to go back to.  I usually set mine to every other turn.

I think most folk scout with colony ships, especially early.  That way, if you find a good planet, you can scoop it up right then.

One thing NOT to do is to waste time in the early colony rush, especially on Tough and above.

I haven't seen the habitable planet problem either.  Are you counting those planets that are habitable, but not immediately colonizable like Toxic or Radiated planets?  Those are still counted as habitable, but you need the technology in order to colonize them.

Also, there might be a lot of PQ1and PQ2 planets on the map.  They appear to be uninhabitable, but will eventually become nice planets.  I've had PQ 1 and PQ2 planets become PQ14 and PQ16s.  Some even go higher.

I don't know what to say about disappearing starbases.  That's a new one on me.

And I agree with you on the Scout ships being useless.  I never build them.

I have never seen a PQ 1,2, or 3 planet.  Only PQ0 or PQ4 and up.  I didn't know they existed.

The sub-4PQ planets didn't get added until DA/TA, so if you're running only DL that would be why.
