Good and Evil

Why good?

Why are there NO bonuses for being good? If you look at the whole evil/good thing all you get is penalties for good and bonuses for Evil. Why in the galaxy would I want to run a 'good' empire and take hits to production or pop or BC? Isnt there a mod out there that gives you a better choice when confronted with Good vrs Evil dilemas?

"The roaches on Kartoum V have been found to be detrimental to our new colony"

Good>>> (Let the live and take a population hit -5% pop)

Evil>>>> (Kill them all and make roach stew!!!, +5% soldiering)

Again why would I want to be good?

The above is an example. Why isnt there a mod that actually rewards you for doing the right thing?

I would take Good if it gave some minor penalty but gave an immediate influence bonus to me..

Well I can't cite examples, but I know I had a couple of them that had decent reasons to go with good.  However, that's not usually the case and I'll explain why they did that.

They offer the choices in that way because it's more challenging to take a path of "goodness" Evil is the easy way out and there should always be apparant benefits to choosing the evil way. In the game, none of the good choices really add up to anything mentionable but thay also don't hurt you that much either(and if they might, choose neutral).  I think they are there for us to flesh out our empire's alignment.  It's more a matter of imagination than directly affecting the game. If you are playing a good race then the evil choices wouldn't matter to you one bit.  Even though some of them are tempting, they hardly make the game easier.

That being said I think there are some unstated benefits to choosing a path of good in this game.  Certainly, the improved defenses and the planet temple of righteousness or whatever is nice to have!

Thanks for the reply. I would just like to have a (few) positives when confronted with moral choices for good. Almost every choice I get when an event occurs is a negetive for choosing good and a small benefit for choosing Evil. Is there a mod that can balance that out a bit?

Thanks again!

probably because when you keep choosing evil, yes you get a bonus, but also all the other races view you negatively and are more likely to attack you.  so choose good for a penalty, or evil for a bonus and a potential war. :)

I've encountered one example where there was a positive benefit to choosing the "Good" option.  It was a weird scenario where there were benefits all around.  Like if you chose the "Evil" path you got a Planetary Production bonus, I forget what "Neutral" had, but choosing "Good" netted you a Diplomacy bonus.

I've also run into a few bugged scenarios that involved money where choosing "Good" offered less of a penalty.

From a scoring POV, the game mechanics simply favor evil--unless I've somehow missed a good post from a scoremonster about how to get into their big-total crowd by playing Good. If you don't care about scoring, it isn't such a big deal, especially if you get Xeno Ethics fairly early and don't have to see those vexing ethical events any more.

Still, it is an old and dear gripe for some of us with a role-playing streak, and also for folks like the OP who just think it seems weird. Personally, none of the rationales I've read for why this is so is really that persuasive. The thing boils down to an aesthetic choice by the designers that some of us just don't like very much.

I seem to remember in the first Gal Civ there were definite reasons for chosing good over evil and vice versa that went beyond a minor imediate bonus (or penalty.)  Its been a while but I seem to remember there were certain technologies that only opened up once you were a certain alignment.  Terror stars for evil, though that isnt the case anymore, and some other tech that let you boost your influence up to ungodly levels if you chose to be good.

Interface appearance would change as well, the buttons and look would be more light and bright for good and dark and sinister for evil.  Likewise for the news droid.

Choosing good can be worthwhile, especially with the Drath and Altarian tech trees.  But since you can buy your alignment there's really no reason beyond roleplaying to forego the evil random and colonization event bonuses.

There's that time between getting a 'leaning to evil' rep and when you finally get Xeno Ethics--that can affect AI attitudes to you a bit.

Evil Genius, there are alignment-dependent techs in GC2 also, e.g. the Neutrality Learning Center and the Mind Control Center.

The Neutrality Learning Center is the reason I usually choose Neutral. Love that thing.

I was penalized once in a game while I was evil when all the other races voted that evil races could only have one trade route so all my trade routes were declared 'too dangerous too continue' Luckily I didn't have that many going anyway. Still that took away the option for later when raising money for war ships.
