Updated Manual (0.99.010)

As reported in the News (http://www.galciv.com/index.asp?action=full&NewsID=307) a new manual is now available via SDC. As you find things that are wrong (or have suggestions to add), please post on this thread.

Does the update replace the pdf in the GC directory? The date does not change on this file after running the pdf update.

Yes. File is now 3MB, and should say "By Brad Wardell and Steve Rose" on the cover page.

Ralegh, pretend you are giving directions to someone who is really stupid. How do you get to the new manual?

Christopher,

Download Stardock Central from the GalCiv website. Run it and set it up with your Serial number. Go to the Software section and download the manual.

The stats given for the various political parties still
don't mesh with what's actually in the game..
see Universalists, etc.

Please update whenever you guys find the time.

Be well all!

Love the added content. Exactly what I wanted from the start. Even more insight into those, and other, details of the game would be greatly appreciated.

Still the content from the original manual needs to be updated too. Things like the GNN button and the life force resource come to mind.

Still, all in all, good job.

Do I have to install Stardock to get the new manual? Stardock messed my system up badly on an earlier installation and I would MUCH rather just download the file.

I'd be surprised if it wasn't available for download later, but currently it's only on the SDC. The update to the manual was just made yesterday.

Stardock didn't read the player submittals to the manual or the finished product itself...

Example...

"Active Gov. Ignores GNN
ON – With this option turned on, the active governor ignores the Galactic News reports. (not sure if
this is right…) OFF – With this option turned off, the active governor will react to the Galactic News
reports. (not sure if this is right…)"

We're not sure if this is right, but we're putting it in the manual anyway!

Anyone know what this option (Active Gov Ignores GNN) does?

this option stops planet production screens appearing for planets which have completed projects IF the active governor has another project to build.

Paul.

Is there any link to download the manual which is not through Stardock? If not, could we get one?

OK, at great personal expense (well, its free), manual now available at http://groups.msn.com/RoseSolutionsFamily/page.msnw?fc_p=&fc_a=0. Download all three files into the same directory - then run the exe. (This is a self-expanding executable, shipped in pieces less than 1MB in size so it will work with my - free - hoster.) For techno geeks, I built it using WinAce.

Well there ya go ... the link took me to a MSN area which I need a password to get, and then had the nerve to tell me I did not have permission to view the page after clicking on the first link. :CONGRAT:

Will Galciv ever come out in Linux? Or Mac?

Here is a second request for the updated manual to be posted to the GalCiv website. I appreciate the opportunity to install Stardock, but it's not feasible for me to do so. Will the manual in the encyclopedia eventually be updated from the October, 2002 version?

Thanks.

Has this been fixed in the current manual? :)

(a) Sorry about the link - security now set to allow anonymous users - my bad. Link should work now! (I can't control what people put on their web pages etc, so this is all I can do for ya!)

(b) Yep, the parties etc are still wrong. I will make sure they are fixed. (And post the summary here real soon now.)

I did end up installing Stardock Central. It's a nice little app and it didn't do anything to my computer that upset me (and I'm pretty picky about software on my computer - it's the only shareware on my computer). It's a small application with a small footprint. I don't know if this will help other skeptics, but I'm going to leave it on my computer.

Ho ho, that MSN link was fun, I tought that after registering to MSN thing I could get the files, but was I wrong... Still no access, so I ended clicking on delete (exploring a bit..) and I found that I'm not a group member?! Luckily MSN had put a link to join the group just there and even more luckily joining didn't require permission or anything! (or the group really does accept just anyone..) well in anycase...
I finally got the files. Thanks
PS. oops, the group is OPEN so it DOES allow joining w/o permission.

Btw, at the manual page 50 loss of people due low morale are reffered as 'dying'.

"...(2) consider the number of colonists to use carefully: too many (depending on the planet quality) will lead to low morale and some dying off, and..."

What happened to the 'people are not really dying, they just don't want to pay to the greedy gov anymore' explanation for peopleloss! Uuaaah!

-m

PS, it wouldn't be too bad idea to put, in 'strategy tips' part of guide, line 'Just do as the AI does' .. for some reason you get good results from this :)

Thanks Mav69. AI tip is a good idea.

Yeah, there are some inconsitencies in how we talk about population decline. IMHO, decrease in population due to overpop on a low PQ planet is real deaths. Decrease due to overtaxing is leaving the economy (either going blackmarket, leaving the workforce, or perhaps migrating somewhere else) which might be a 'real' population loss, or might not. In game terms the effect is the same, but confusing because in both cases the rate of pop loss is linked to morale, which is affected by the PQ and the tax rate etc.

Now also availble via download section of the galciv.com site.

On page 23 under morale, it states that Transports take 1000 million and Combat (or Battle) Transports take 5000.

In the games I have played, Transports hold up to 500 million troops and Combat Transports can hold up to 2.5 Billion!!!

Just a typo, or a future adjustment?

The maximum capacity of the Transport is 1000 million, and the maximum capacity of Combat Transports are 5000 million. You may have your transport producing planets set to auto-launch and I think it always loads half capacity when set that way.

yeah..if you don't use auto-launch ..when you manually launch them move the slider all the way to the right...the regular transport will
hold 1 billion soldiers and the combat transport will
hold 5 billion soldiers.
