GalCiv2 (or 3) needs missions for the Flagship.

I've always felt that the flagship should be much more important than it is.  It's nice that anomalies respawn now, which gives the flagship something to do for the entire game, but it seems like a ship that mirrors the Enterprise or another species representing ship should have some important things to do.  What I'd love to see is:

--Missions!  Flagship stops at planets and picks up missions (sort of like Puzzle Quest) where they can get a reward for transporting a diplomat to another planet, bringing scientists to witness an event at a certain parsec, delivering medical supplies to a planet/fleet/etc.  The possibilites are endless here.  Just use the plotlines from sci-fi TV shows for inspiration.

--Rewards for completing missions could be any number of things, not just cash.  Discounts on construction, new technologies (some exclusively gained from missions even), influence points, changed relations between races, ascension points, etc.  The possibilities for rewards are many as well.

--No cutscenes would be necessary, simply a new screen with text for each mission and a generic mission complete screen.

This seems like it would be easy enough to implement into GalCiv2 even, but if it proves impossible or too much work than I'd love to at least see it in GalCivIII.

Neither, really, but GC2 is at (and beyond) the end of its life cycle, so it works much better as a suggestion for GC3.

I like it, though.

This sounds like a swell idea. I like it  .

This is definitely a good idea for GC3.  I like it a lot.

The idea is great, I hope it comes with the ability to promote a ship of the bigger & better generation as new flagship.

Why?

Just upgrade the one you're given.  With miniaturization, a medium hull is more than enough.

I have found that the flagship can become a most formidable ship.  All it needs is a refit and those anomalies add up.

BTW, I sometimes refit it in times of peace with lots of engines, to get more of the anomalies, then again when the wars begin.

It just feels wrong that the flagship of an empire ist not the best the empire can offer. At the beginning its ok the medium hull, since it is the best you have. So good even that you are not able to build another one of its size. Worthy the title flagship. Later its not. Or to take a TV example: Startreks Enterprise afaik was always the federation flagship, but as the federation tech improves so does the flagship. You even can take the hull size example between Archers Enterprise as beginning med hull and in the later movies Picards titanic Sovereign Class Enterprise as highend huge hull. Same "Empire" different flagships. The ones before retired in good memory, they where just not imressive enough anymore to earn the Flagship title.

True, but the Enterprise wasn't always the best ship, either.  This phenomenon is most evident in Voyager, since they don't get most of the tech upgrades, but it's almost always present.

The flagship doesn't have to be the ship of the fleet with the most firepower or the most hull or the most shields or whatever.  It just has to be the most important, for whatever reason.

I do agree that the flagship doesn't become important enough late game, but there's no reason for the flagship to be a 4000 production/55000BC rush buy cost 575 attack 23xBHE all-attack huge hull.

Voyager? Don´t know what it does have to do with Enterprise or being flagship. But anyway. There is now reason for the huge hull that it can´t be either. Thats why I think its a good idea to have the ability to promote a new flagship at some point(s) of the game if there is going to be a little more attention to it. At least in my longer games the most used single ship turns out to be a huge hulled one, my "new Flagship" (but with a unique name). The old one has the honor to be the only light cruiser with a name. If for whatever wonderful reason this flagship missions gets implemented in a sequel it should not be a problem for you if its your choice which ship is your flagship. You just hang onto the med sized one.

I had another good idea: missions should reflect upon your allignment as well.  For instance, Drengin planets would most likely offer evil missions, Alatrians would offer good, Korx-neutral, etc.  That way, the missions you choose to perform would alter your allignment just like the planetary events do.
