How to upgrade ships

I'm fairly new to playing Gal Civ II.  I've noticed when I upgrade my ship designs the only way I seem to be able to upgrade my old ships of the same type is by paying for it.  Is there a way I can have my planets upgrade the ships manually (like they do when building new ships).  So what I want to do is when I upgrade, lets say my Fighter from I to the new II level (with more advanced weapons/defenses) I want to be able to que my factories to do the upgrade instead of spending 300BC or so per ship to upgrade - is there a way to do this?

I'm afraid not. There is no way to get around the cost of upgrading. If I understand your idea correctly, you want to "pay" for the upgrades with factory production, but you can only do it with credits.

Yes, there is.

Shut down the factory.  Use the credits to pay for ship upgrades.  It's a workaround solution, but in terms of actual effect, it's pretty much the same.  Once I have an active fleet going, I tend to shut down all but the primary ship building starports I have.  Saves money.

I ussually run a surplus at some point (lots of stock markets with a farm and morale building on each planet... except for very low PQ worlds). As such, I can ussually afford to keep all my ships up to date.

You might wish to try it.
