Galciv Endgame

Hi, first of all I have to say I love this game, have been playing other games for awhile and came back to it the last month and its tons of fun. I only have one problem with it, and that is making it *hard*. I usually play on crippling difficulty, my strategy is to research economy/research/diplomatic upgrades until other civs start getting planetary invasion, then research some weapons and get some small size ships out. I often find I can destroy huge numbers of ships by rotating damages ships out to go repair. It gets to the point where my small size ships have so much hp they're basically unkillable. When I get medium sized ships, same thing happens, and at that point I've won the game. There's just no way the computer can kill my ships, even if my empire is very small. My question is, how can I make end game hard? If I tune up the difficulty, I get clobbered because I can't research fast enough, so that doesn't work. Even if I could though, the same basic problem would arise. If I can live long enough to make ships, once my ships have fought lots of battles the game is pretty much over and its no fun to play.

AFAIK there's no way to set just some of "difficulty" parameters. So, since that can't be changed, YOU need to change the way you play. Either stop sitting on your butt just defending and start attacking AI(s), or increase difficulty level and learn to cope with "problems" the increased difficulty level will generate. It could be hard at the beginning, but the hardest the task one accomplishes, the more revarding it is at the end.

My problem is that I can't research the weapons tree and the economy tree at the same time fast enough at higher than crippling difficulties, either my ships are too weak, or my economy is too weak to produce ships fast enough. My basic question though, is does anyone else have the same problem with endgame? If I can survive long enough to fend off a war or two, my ships become such high level that I'm able to kill a fleet and go back to repair losing 0 ships everytime, theres no way for the computer to kill my ships anymore and it just seems no fun. I really love the beginning of the game, but if I can survive the beginning, all the sudden the game goes from being a game of survival to a long drawn out mop up, which isn't the transition im looking for.
