New updates compatibility with saved games

The problem I have is that I am writing an extensive AAR for my ToA game and when I uploaded the first patch it messed up the game (wouldnt work anymore)

I am told that the patch wasnt save game compatible

The question I have for Stardock is are any of the patches save game compatible and if not why not?

The devs try to make them compatible when possible, but that is generally limited to minor updates only. Bigger updates often make mechanic or data changes that make that impossible.
