Random Crashing help please

Hi

Ive been playing twighlight ver 2.02 fine

My motherboard then broke & has been replaced & windows recovered to same point (by pc shop). When starting Gal Civ again I could only get about 5-10 mins play before I get a APP crash. I was also getting the odd graphical issue so I have updated video drivers via nvidia (22 jan 09 version). However problem persists.

I'm a PC idiot, so I have no idea how to post long lists of debug files etc. If anyone can help please put idiot proof instructions of what to do!

Thanks

If you're seeing graphic corruption and the issues only began after the hardware change, then you may be having a heat/driver issue or the new hardware may have some defect (possibly if the board failed but they kept the old memory, it could have suffered minor damage in the failure). Unfortunately the debug.err won't really help in that case.

If you can describe the graphical issues you're experiencing in more detail it may give some hint as to the problem's cause.

Hi

Thanks for the reply,

My motherboard problem wasnt a major crash - there was a problem with the power supply to the board cutting out, I'm no expert so you could be right re memory problems - I've had no problems with other games.

With regard to the graphical issues these seem to show up mainly (but not restricted to) on the choosing of your opponents on startup - these incluse the boxes around the characters missing, half missing etc.

The last time I tried to play the game I got a weird written message behind all the graphics in the game - this caused the game graphics to flash between the written page & play screen about 5 times a second. too fast to read anything - however was a full page of writting.

These problems only seem to show up after 5 mins or so - I'm trying to create a new game (looking for decent starting world - naughty, naughty). I get to create about 5 games on average before problems occur.

The main issue doesnt seem to be the graphical problems (as these happen occasionally rather than as a rule) but the game either hangs & I have to close via Task manager or closes to desktop with the generic "Gal 2 has stopped working" message.

Looking in the reports to Microsoft that happens automaticallty these seem to indicate an APPcrash (whatever that is!?)

My motherboard was a slight upgrade as the chipset wasnt still available although the old card was only 14 months old. The graphics card is the same ie nvidia 8800gt.

I have tried resizing to my resolution on my desktop (1280*960) -{currently playing game at {1078*768} to be the same both by altering the desktop res & the ini file but doesnt seem to make any difference - I didnt fiddle with these settings at all before motherboard change.

If you require any specific data please include idiot proof instructions on how to provide it - thanks

there is a known issue with ctd's while repetatively starting a new game. in my case, i ctd when starting new game through main menu, but can use ctrl+n without any problems.

I also experience random crashes, conditions/observations:

- start new games more then once -> will crash

- flickering text in start menu of GC II -> will crash

- when playing, on gettings status reports (weekly etc.) the display kind of tries to darken but does not for a very very short moment

- random crash: sometimes runs for hours, sometimes only for some minutes before Windows pop up "...stopped working"

I don't expirience crashes on other games (Doom 3, Civ 4...), all drivers are up to date, thermals are green.

Any hint to get a more stable game expirience - very much appreciated:D
