What version of TA are you playing?
I remember when this was happening, I would quickly pop around the map, or go to select a ship, or even bring up the planetarty screen then close out of it. That seemed to wake up the game again.
However, one thing to note since you mentioned 'epic game' is that if the Dregin are in the game and just had gone to war with someone...they probably have thousands of those damned cruisers right now, each individually attackng/moving.
Most highest CPU boost settings (for all AIs at once) can also grind a good chunk of late game turns to a crawling pace - that IS absolutely normal. AntiAliasing or too low FPS (caused by Video array) is another drain on resources which may be prevented by fiddling with UI options.
The TurnButton gone missing syndrome is a lot more about how a local PC system handles the gameplay situations than any other "buggy code claims", btw.
I notice the turn button disappearing when the game waits for me to move some units with left over moves and no remaining orders
after I gave orders to said ship or ships, it reappears
is that what you are talking about ?
I had the same problem, the button disappeared and would not come back, so I saved the game and exited, then restarted the game and loaded the saved game and the button was back again and now worked.
Yes... the code engine is simply busy with HUGE amounts of ships to move and must put your 'next turn' in an absolutely normal pending mode while it finishes whatever has to be done, TBS principles included.
Hardware, Anti-Aliasing, some UI options may help... but the routines will always have to do their calculations.
I've had this error too, and it's not related to system performance at all. For me, this bug happened mainly in the endgame phase, where I'd conqured all but 1 planet and was making Huge hull size ships every turn for score.
Sometimes when I clicked 'turn', the turn button would temporarily dissapear while ships moved -- I understand that's due to a large volume of ship movement. The bug occured when one of those ships sometimes reached their waypoints and would sit there, between turns, holding up the turn progress, waiting for orders. This is the game behavior I considered bug-worthy. Even when I hit 'tab' and selected the ship the game was telling me still had moves left, I couldn't give it move orders or skip its turn with the spacebar. The only way I could un-jam the stuck turn was to select another ship with moves left and give it movement orders. After I would move a random ship, the turn would unjam.
This isn't a performance issue. It's a "feature" designed to help keep the player from wasting starship movement. The problem is that the "feature" is also bugged, so instead of informing the player of remaining ship movement *DURING* the turn, it does it between turns, and then won't let you move the ship it directs you to.
Well, that's what i also meant but you are explaining it somehow differently or much more accurately.
TBS is such a magic but weird trap anyway; how many times have i lost a good planet to AIs by simply forgetting to move the colonyship to the planet BEFORE clicking next turn. Eventually, i got my mind to turn_on and never lost an opportunity since.
Hit CTRL+S to save, (it will save still at this time) just as a precaution and start hitting find. Every ship that you are brought to when hitting Find just move it and the turn will progress.
You may have to do this a number of times.
If that does not work load the save you just did and resume playing.
Hope it helps.
I just had this issue in the Dread Lords level "Apocalypse" while playing through Twilight of the Arnor. About 1 hour in, the turn button dissapeared. I know it was not due to my ships not being moved, as I did not have ANY (pressing "FIND" did nothing). I waited for about 10 minutes, trying everything, and nothing). I know it is not a performance issue as I have a Quad Core 2.83 GHz with 4GB of RAM running Vista 64-bit. It may have been an OS compatability issue, who knows.
Any help?
Also, that level seems near impossible. I played on Tough... nope. Then Challenging... nope. Then Normal, three times, nope. I tried rushing with colony ships, but I cannot defeat their ships. I tried researching forever to get powerful weapons, nope. I tried stealing their techs, but they attach so many planets of mine before i can get in there. Any guide for this level? Thanks

*bump*
I am having this problem a lot. I just started playing TA for the first time today (even though I've had it since beta) and everytime I reach around my 40th turn, the turn button starts dissapearing when I press it. It's consistant, even applies on a 1 vs 1 on a small map. I have to exit and restart the game everytime in order to get it back.
It's happeneing roughly every second turn on my end, making it a game breaking bug. I have also had this problem before, back before DA was announced, but it was fixed in a patch (don't remember which). I also have the latest version.
