i'm new to modding . and i just wondered if any one would mind help me get started? , i got sick of playing the default settings.

This takes you to a very useful guide to all the various things in the XMLs. If you have a specific problem that the tutorial does not cover, fell free to ask: me or someone else will get an answer.
Read & Look around the multiple threads right here, randomize often, rinse & repeat. Bookmark what you feel needs further attention.
Dunno what your free time is or how serious you are about modding attempts, but i'd say that within a month or so of regular & continual 'analysis' of the essentials, someone can get the hang of it pretty fast.
Two must have items; Carielf's Modding Guide (it still maybe a bit old but it IS important in every ways) and Netriak's Galactopedia.
You might also want to download a few other things from the Library which are living examples of MODs (more recent, the better) that *do* work.
If you intend to mod the graphics, you will need either The Gimp (which is free, but I always found it a bit hard to use), or Photoshop (which costs a king's ransom, but is very user-friendly). For ships, it would also be helpful to compile as many jewlery expansions (like KHSM) as you can get ahold of.
