Question: How/Why do other races become Team members?

Folks...

 I have been playing for a little bit and I keep running into the following problem. My nearest competitors (ie the race I need to "take care" of keep becoming "team" members. I have purposely not traded tech or given in to the demands of races that I knew I was going to want to go after eventually.

1 How do I prevent these races from becoming team members ?

2. How do I salvage the games I already have been playing and destroy the team relationship...  do not see a kill treaty etc etc and If i try to attack it tells me I need to break the treaty.

 

Any help would be appriciated.

Are you using Random opponents?

Uncheck Random, go through and check each race, and reset their relations to Unknown.  That's where they're set as Team (probably from playing the campaign, actually, but not positive).

Are you possibly playing the campaign?  You're assigned to be on a team with some races during various phases of the campaign.

You can't break a Team.

Team is a level beyond Allied, and it can only be set before the game starts.  It can never be broken.  If you're seeing it, you're probably in the campaign.
