Diplomacy Screen

What does the asterisk mean that precedes some technologies for trading in the diplomacy screen and what implications does it have for tech trading?  I think i have erroneously assumed that these can be traded for cash, but are subsequently unusable by the recipient.  In other words i have been using the cash from these techs to support my economy in the hope that they will not benefit races that purchase them.

The asterisks mark techs that are unique to that civ's tech tree. If you sell one of yours to another civ, they get to use it just like you do. Some unique techs are not tradable--maybe that's where you got confused.
