Caught in an Infinite War

You gotta love this. I attack a world trapped in the same sector as two of my own. Because they are trading with another race, they both go to war with me. Then because of an alliance, another race goes to war a turn later, and then because of they're aliances all the races go to war with me the turn after that! Gets worse. I'm actually holding them all off, and all of them want out of the war but can't stop it. One of them will offer a peace treaty, but because of the war status of their trading/ally they have to go right back to war a turn later. This is beyond stupid. Why even offer the peace treaty, if you know your alliances will just drag you back into the war?

But here's the real kicker. We finally got the galactic cease fire event in the United Planets and it passed unanimously. Only problem is we're all still at war the next turn like the vote never took place. Huh?! It's probably just a matter of time now before the spineless other races surrender to one another in a mutual screw the human pact and then crush me...cripes.

There's at least one other thread discussing this problem. Sometimes you can take advantage of it (while the other races are locked in combat around you while you stay neutral) and sometimes it just sucks to be you.

Your best bet, if you can manage it, is to go to them and make peace with ALL the other races in the same turn. Might be worth coughing up a concession in the form of one tech you offer EACH of the others at the same time (so they can't then trade it amongst themselves). Good luck!

Message editting is so cool! :)

The second part of this caught my eye, in a game im working on at the moment, I made the mistake of dropping behind on my milatry strength slightly while trying to bribe my way into the Altarians good side, and they attacked me, followed shortly by the Torians. They weren't allied initialy, but did ally a few turns later.

I was pritty much holding my own for a bit, when the Drengins who were also at war with these two as well as the Arceans, decided they were out for the count and dropped out leaving me with about 6 undefended planets spreadout from one corner of the map to the other.

Realising I couldn't hold the new planets I traded a couple of the least defendable for peace treaties with both Altarians and the Torians, hoping to gain a little time to build some more ships and catch up milatry wise again. I was only a couple of pixles bellow both of these on the graphs.

10 seconds after hitting , the invasion window poped up after as the Altarians and Torians started attacking those undefended planets I had just received.

Anyone have an idea what happoned to the peace treaty I had just negotiated, I dont even remember seeing a message stating that they were declairing war again ...

By the way, it's not only galciv - I had the same problem in civ3.
The big difference is: I somehow believe that it will be fixed sooner or later in galciv (and it needs to be fixed for sure) while civ3 doesn't have this kind of support. :)

I have encountered this too, although it work to my advantage. Everytime my enemies ally wanted to make peace with me I insisted on a new tech. with his surrender. He was so desperate to not be at war with me that he agreed. Only to have to declare war on me the next turn and then offer peace etc. you get the idea. It is a definent flaw.

Reference post #2, I've seen this every once in a while - all of a sudden one of your friends (or enemies!) just attacks you at a newly acquired system for no apparent reason and with no warning (much like we human players do... doh!). :)

I suspect that what has happened is that the AI has effectively put some ships on autopilot to a destination, so that when the ships get there, by george they're going to attack no matter what has happened in the meantime.

I must confess that I have found I can get out of this by restoring a saved game and either putting something in the way (if there are transports coming) or moving my defending ships out of the way (if the ships were going to attack my system defenders). This seems to make the AI re-evaluate the situation and give new orders to the inbound ships.

I had that nasty cycle of war in my latest game which I can no longer play because of the CTD on my saved game...Like 4 other games I have. Waiting for 1.4 which is suppose to solve this...sorry for the rant...now back on topic, I kept extorting money for 20 turns from the two minor races and one of the major races for peace every turn. They Declare war, I offer peace for a price, they accept, the next turn it starts all over again. What I couldn't tell is if the agreement to pay continued even though they declared war on me the next turn. Their bank roll went down quickly but I didn't notice mine going up all that quickly.
