I need some help with trading & diplomacy please guys

Ive noticed when trading for techs that I can add a number of FREE items to the list of the opponent. ie trading 1 tech for another there is a difference in value which can be equated with gold. However I seem to be able to add in ships & sometimes planets without altering the value of gold downwards.

eg.  I trade Space Mining for Ion propulsion - I would get say Ion propulsion + say 993bc (figs not accurate just an example)

If I adjust the gold slider of oppo to say 994bc it goes red as the deal is now imbalanced, however I can seem to add planets occasionally (some seem to have a value others not) also I can often add in all the oppos scout ships & his miner ship.

So now the deal looks like this:   Space Mining = Ion Propulsion, planet x, scout ship a,b,c,d , miner ship, + 993bc.

Is this a bug? Does the AI not assign (trade) values to some ships/planets?

Is this in any way related to my diplomacy figs? I would expect this to just effect the overall trade values not give me free stuff. Confirmation please?

This seriously imbalances the game as after a round of trading I can end up with say 4 extra miners & 15+ scout ships which I can upgrade to military ships later in the game if needbe.

I'm playing challenging (the one below the level playingfield - {10% economy AI}) difficulty (still a newbie) - which uses the advanced algorithms so it cant be down to this.

Thanks

You've found what I call the diplomatic tech trade "cap".  There are certain points where the AI won't offer more credits for a tech, though this calculation is dependent on the tech in question, how much cash the other race has, and your diplomatic ability relative to theirs.  I believe it works in a fashion similar to the moral penalty for raising taxes, and the requirements to push a value higher have sudden "jumps" where a 1 bc change tacks on a huge penalty.  347bc seems to be a fairly common value for one tech in DL.  The funny thing with these jumps is that ships aren't counted as credits, so you can hit the cap and usually get some other goodies that have a total value less than the adjusted value for that one extra credit.  It's almost like you're getting free scouts and freighters for the early game!
