Expanding Space Combat?

Greetings everyone! I have played GC2TA for quite a while now and am still hooked to it. However, I have always found the linear weapon research and deployment to be somewhat boring. Is there a mod that modifies the techtree so more different weapons are available, or introduces other changes to the combat model such as different armor and so on?

Thanks in advance!

AFAIK, the weapon/defense types are hardcoded, so unless you want to mess around in the source-code (which I do NOT advise!), you are stuck with the ones you have. The tech tree IS moddable to be less linear, but no-one seems to have done it so far. My advice: mess around with the tech editor that comes with the game: It's a great modding tool.

You CAN change the names of the weapons and defenses by modifying several files, but you are stuck with three.

One of the [many] reasons that the tree for "The Bringers of Light" has taken so long to complete is the fact that the tree is much less linear. The weapons for TBL are linear at the moment, but that will probably either be changed before the first release or after.

I beg to differ. X-Worlds makes extensive use of alternate weapons & defenses (data & value in a number of indirect ways), Version 06-A will **ALSO** introduce a number of new ship components which (sadly) must somehow adhere to the usual Beam-Missile-Driver concept since it is Hard-Coded.

Sorry for the necromancy, but since some time has passed I'd like to reiterate my quest for a mod that adds depth to the combat system. I'm not so much looking for an addition of more damage types, but more for something that expands weapon development beyond the monotonous linear expansion of damage vs. space and perhaps adds the option to branch out into researching heavy and light weapons, depending on you individual strategy.

If that's what you want, my advice is to wait for The Bringers of Light. The plan to is to do exactly as you have stated with weapons. The demo will hopefully be out by sometime this summer.

Oh, btw, you can learn more about the mod at tbl.impulsedriven.net or at I-mod-productions.com
